Workshop on Impact of Groundnut Trade Ends
By Musa Barrow

Action Aid The Gambia, on Wednesday, 26 March, 2008 organised a one-day tradition workshop on the impact of trade in communiities especially groundnut.
The workshop, which was held at the Baobao Holiday Resort, was preceded by a study commissioned by Action Aid The Gambia on the impact of trade in commodities (groundnut) on people’s livelihood.
The report recommends appropriate trade solutions. This document will be used as an advocacy and lobby tool during the UNCTD meeting in Accra, Ghana.
During the workshop, the report, which deals with a whole host of recommendations on the adverse impact of groundnut trade, was thoroughly scrutinized with a view to making the necessary adjustments.
The document also gave a detailed and comprehensible analysis on the root causes of the trade imbalance between developed and developing countries.
Participants used the occasion to look at the history of introduction of groundnut in The Gambia and what necessitated it. Various speakers from the National Farmers’ Platform emphasised the need for government to give support to Gambian Farmers. Farmers also attribute their poor generation of income from their produce to what they called the intervention of middlemen between farmers and buyers.
They further identified the need for irrigation during the dry season, which they said will enable them to produce sufficient food for consumption. The farmers pointed out that producing sufficient food for consumption is completely linked with stability of nations.
However, farmers were told during the workshop that before governments intervention, farmers should take the initiative by forming formidable groups.
