New Charges Against Supt. Sanyang

Two new charges were levelled against Superintendent Manlafi Sanyang, alone, on Wednesday, 19 March. He appeared in a crowded court room at the Banjul Magistrates Court before Magistrate Olagubutu Kayode.
Count one of the new charges is official abuse. The particulars indicate that on or about in June, 2002 in Banjul and in diverse places in the Gambia, Manlafi Sanyang stole a government vehicle, with registration number BJL 4591A, without proper authority, thereby commits offence. Count two states, stealing contrary to section 252 of the criminal code. The particulars indicate that on or about June 2002 in Banjul and in diverse places in the Gambia,ing an Manlafi Sanyang stole D75,000 from the proceeds of the sale of a vehicle registration number BJL 4591A, being the property of the Gambia, thereby committing an offence.
Mr. Sanyang, with a shy smile, pleaded not guilty to the two charges. His counsel, Lamin S. Camara, applied for bail, noting that the charges are bailable. He also asked the court to put into consideration that the bail condition must not be excessive.
The state counsel Emmanuel O. Fagbenle did not object to the bail application.
Magistrate Olagubutu Kayode granted him bail in the sum of D200, 000, also to provide two Gambian sureties residing in the country with gainful employment.
The case was adjourned for the trial to commence.
Superintendent Manlafi Sanyang, vehicle controller at state house, Lieutenant Bakary Camara, personal guard to president Jammeh and Domenico Fideli, an Italian architect, are standing trial together at the same court on similar charges.
