a short while back, a certain african-american reacted to the phrase above with a tear-jerking, vote-winning speech which was in response to the inflammatory use of this phrase. i did not really follow this story with interest, but i do remember thinking that this phrase has a more obvious meaning, one which apples to gambia very accurately. today we sit here on a rare break from monday drudgery at work and can take a relaxed view at the current "trend" in the gambia. let's look, friends. ..a fuel shortage, plane delays, commuter distress, lack of public transport .. a decline in tourism, a drop in sales in senegambia, grumbling across the local economies affected by tourism .. a mad attack on the currency, under the guise of allowing a drop in local prices for the local people and a consummate failure(?lie)in that effort ..continuing press harrassment, oppression and behind the scenes interference against free reporting ...an airport that robs people before they even get into the country and hassles vast numbers of tourists ...a president who is some kind of self-announced "god", who can see the future, cure incurable diseases, a west-african self-proclaimed "mandela" style statesman, without whom west africa cannot cohesively function .... a president who can release devils into the world ....a president who is now allowing the press to call him "mad" and "possessed". ..... a coup in the palace reported in the press as an event planned and occurring as we read.
kind people of the gambia, this is just a coolection of stories gleaned from any readily-available sources.
out there are hundreds more in the same vain.
if you read this about other countries, what would you be thinking in response?
14 years of warnings....
the chickens truly are coming home to roost.... HAPPY EASTER

“The chickens coming home to roost,” typical of Malcolm’s statements and one that annoyed the opposite race was uttered at a time of war. With the Harlem kind of life style in the sixties, blacks in America were under the microscopic discrimination. When JF Kennedy was assassinated, Malcolm resonated the statement that helped angered a lot of those that misconstrued it. Perhaps it could mean, the intended ‘oppression’ on the alienated sons of slaves who happened to find America as a home, now repulses back with a harsh blow to those that plotted it.
But JFK was a sympathizer to the alienated blacks, in fact the Kennedy family wholly were. It is certain that Dr. King, if he were to utter it, would have said it at a different timing, not after the assassination of a great figure like JFK. Most importantly to reiterate that both Honorable Malcolm and Dr. King fought important battles in America.
Now does it resonate to mother Gambia?
I belief the evil being orchestrated by many came back to hit them. Perhaps Lurks will help define his position.
Regards, Comrade.

morning , dalton.Hope you are fine and dandy. this was kind of a semantic thing , about the use of that particular phrase and its general meaning. interesting how an intended thread always takes a tangent when responded to. thanks for the infill regarding it's use in a racial context in the USA. that was what i admitted to knowing little about. over here , i think the phrase means that a path of action and reaction generally transpires into a predictable result. if this is not so, then my thread is erroneous. if it is a correct-ish definition, then i think i am implying - and this not a new notion - that the gradual deterioration of this regime into "madness", cloud-cuckoo-land policies and practice, fiscal mismanagement, oppression of the press, abuse of the citizens, bogus global diplomacy etc etc - was not very surprising and that the consequences of such a deterioration are predictable and obvious - i.e. the chickens are coming home to roost ( as by my understanding of the phrase) what to do about it is a different thing altogether. twas not what i wanted to talk about. that will unfold in due course. "define my position?" my position is not relevant to this thread. it might be relevant if people were talking about the path to liberation of the gambian people or suchlike. cheers
NB DALTON - I THINK YOU WROTE "ROAST" RATHER THAN ROOST - VERY FUNNY! |

| ps. can any conspiracy theorists out there come up with reasons why the "madness" story or the "coup" story might be false reporting and why they would benefit the incumbent govt. if they were indeed spreading these stories themselves. |

I am not a political science student but both issues have a benefit for the government. There is a brand of politics in the west called "spinning"
Political parties had what is called a "Spin Master" whose job is to test the political waters by deliberately releasing very unpleasant public policy through some other sources not close to the Government and then cry foul for reasons of state secrecy.
The purpose is for the Government to see public reactions before the draft paper becomes policy by which time, the public would have shredded the "leaked" memo to pieces and angers would have died out.
Therefore when it infact becomes “legitimately” known, there would be not be much reaction and will quietly passed scrutiny to become law. The system works a lot of the time.
I am not a conspiracy theorist but by alarming us about Coups and failed ones, even if they never took place, scares the hell out of any one who is seriously thinking about it.
As in the case of the madness story, that’s not new for students of history. It was said that Lenin used to take his Generals and close confidants to drinking party competitions. During such parties, people freely speak of their intentions and ambitions. Like they say, a drunken mind speaks from the heart. His agents would then round up these people. It was another form of counter intelligence. Fortunately we cannot do that. However, by throwing the madness story on us, there might be clear and deliberate attempts to spot the power hungry.
What do I know? I am just a 200 pound gorilla behind a key board.

Mawdo Kons;
you are not a political science student obviously, and that's a known fact, but you are a history lecturer, not the the one you made us belief. (oops!!)
Lurks,
thanks. I believe Kons said it all.
Just to openly say, the man in the frame is a man I have known well then. Now, I don't know cos he is an associate of jammeh. I will just stop there for now.

Thanks
News just in, the energy portfolio has now been transfrerred to the office of the President. GRTS announced it at the ten o'clock pm news about 30 minutes ago.
Another long reshuffle.
Are the chickens coming to roost. Only time will tell.

I am intrigued by your quote highlighted above. It reminds me of a passenger we boarded at Jarra Soma going to Brikama. It was politics time. It so happened that this passenger was an opposition supporter and wanted to talk but was afraid. He turned around to the Driver and asked
"Are you where i am, and we join and vote for our candidate?"
Then it don on me that there were far too many such supporters around and the debate continued all the way to Brikama but quiet ofcourse at police stops and became more furious again.
".. ayeh wuyan" reminds me of Chinua Achebe.
