Brikama Market Vendors Unhappy With Relocation By Modou Jonga
More than sixty vendors who sell firewood at the Brikama “Sandikaa”(market), closed to the IEC regional office, were recently relocated by the management of the Brikama Area Council. According to sources, the said vendors have been relocated near the Brikama library, close to the regional Governor’s residence. A one-week verbal ultimatum was said to be given to the affected vendors by BAC management.
Speaking to this reporter at their new business site, the fire wood vendors said they are relocated to the said area on 28 February, 2008, following a one week verbal notice by council authorities. They said the reason for the relocation, as cited by the said council, is for the extension of the Brikama health centre.
Speaking further, the relocated vendors lamented that their new business site is not business friendly and that their daily sales are low. They noted that the new site is far from the market and garage thus making the transportation of their wood expensive. They complained of the lack of toilet facilities at the new site.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Brikama Area Council, Mr. Serigne Modou Joof, said that the site previously occupied by the relocated vendors is a property of the Brikama health centre and that the site is required for the expansion of the said health facility.
