geezzzz....what is with people on here.....even a posting with someones holidays snaps can be turned into a debate....get a life!!!!!!!! i have a Bebo account, Facebook account and a my space account where i share plenty of pictures inc my gambia holiday and its not done any harm, its any easy way to share your photos with people that you dont see regularly.
Its funny how everyone was really excited to see these photos and urged bev to put them up and now its turned into a stupid debate and have forced bev now to take the photos off.......???!!!
I just dont get it.............but this response doesnt suprise me and its no wonder why Gambia is in the state it is in.

Don't worry, Bev. When the wind blows the other direction then the postings will change again!! From all the "thanks for these pictures of home" and "great memories" etc to you are a danger to society after just one Mbay posting .... talk about two-faced, eh? Both Anna and I did however warn you to be more cynical |

It is being an idealist that made me want to help in Gambia.
Being cynical in this world is very easy, keeping up idealism is very hard and believe me I am nearly at the end of it. But who will suffer if I lose it? Noone here on Bantaba, but little children in Gambian villages.
I am not going to Gambia for 12 months.
I have to move house, sort out my own life here. My job is very tough and I need to focus on that. My parents are getting older and need my time. My daughters still need my attention.
As the cynics would say PERHAPS 'charity begins at home'.
After 5 years of thinking more about Gambia than myself perhaps I need to refocus for a while.
That will give me some perspective on what I want to continue with and what I am going to leave behind.
The mixed postings I have had on Bantaba make me realise it is very difficult to give with an open heart and for people to accept that that is what it is...... Just a pure human gesture from one person to another to try to help a little.
I'm feeling very sad at the moment, for lots of different reasons. I'm at a turning point in my life.......... |

Fee sweetie..thank you for that. Originally that was my thought enitrely. I am 47 and was quite proud of the fact that I had managed to get the photos uploaded etc.. my daughter and her friends do it ALL the time.
The ISSUE for some people seems to be that I , as a white person, had taken pictures of black people in villages and NOT asked their permission to put them on the internet. That is true and could be seen by many as wrong.
If it was just pictures of ME and scenery, perhaps there would be no problem.
As I have already stated, my guides family know I have put their pictures on and they were thrilled because they have a relative in Belguim that wanted to see the photos. My guide also has friends in the UK....
The English students all sign a form agreeing to material from the trip being used.
I am a responsible teacher with great integrity. Anyone from Bantaba that knows me personally knows that. Those of you that don't know me of course don't. It seems that cynicism is so high you can't believe i am simply what I say I am. Which is very very sad. |

Bev, don't make more of this than it is! Why can't you just think 'drop dead' now and then? Laugh at it all, girl and do not feel as if you have to justify your every movement. In another thread someone put a school's telephone number and people commented on that. Just a public number you can find everywhere if you need to find information on that particular school! Now it's your pictures that cause the controversy. It doesn't matter much what you do, there will always be people who will see ill will in it (that's my cynicism), but hey ho..... I sincerely enjoyed looking at the pictures and it made me want to go there straight away (well, not in the spring break as it turns out - all the planes are full). So: thanks again! I remember in the Gambia people objecting to my making a picture (i always ask, i have learned that by now). You see a very beautiful boat and some men at work at the nets. Still, they don't want you to make the picture! I asked my partner 'why is that'. He told me that they think you will make a postcard out of it and earn money with it and give them nothing, or they think you will show the postcard to your European friends laughing at the fishermen's poverty and the way they have to make a living working so hard. Yeah well...nothing like this will ever enter my mind, but still - you can't make the picture, even though it would be a lovely souvenir from all the overwhelming impressions one had while visiting the Gambia. This is like it is, and people overreact sometimes. It is a pity, but it is definitely not the drama you make it out to be. Back to normal please, and don't give us another picture: that one of you sitting there moping and licking your wounds. |

She might have a positive meaning for it but isn't it there an danger?. all though even she has a permissions from them she know better than an one that this is not positive sign from a good person as she may seems sorry if i see this again differently but i hope one or two will have a understanding of my headaches
So why pulling my writing in different direction . I could said to bev directly that she might misuses the pictures ,why not but that is not the case. I read the first writing of her that comes with the pictures and understand it that she have no intention of negatives. anyway that is up to you guys how to judge it, but i still remains same and this second quality talks will not change it. Instead of giving her a good advices as good friends, then why hasn't you guys do the same
Bev, i know the hard seed between us that will make it hard to belief when i said am sorry but not meaning of hurting you, I could keep this to me or being worst/wicked than you/other one see me as am always.
I just see it as (mainly)problems and that's it,I dont see why i have change it.
Oh my Mighty Meme: I took your warning like GOD

Jack, You do not mean to tell us here that there is no internet manipulation of pictures. This has been a topic here in Sweden and I'am sure in other countries in Europe too. I realy understand why people in the Gambia refuse picture taking sometimes. They have been misused before and it is true. Some of you on the forum here seen not to have experience with the problem. All the noise making to support Bev is not justified. Even if she has not intention to harm people, I think it is only proper to ask before publishing somebodies pictures. If I did it in Sweden without the consent of the person , I could be taken before the magistrate. I am looking at it with the Swedish point of view here. I do not mean to condem bev but just to point out the facts. may be in the countries where some of you reside, there are no problems with the misuse of the internet. Remember there are rules and regulations about the internet usage |

| bev, you have made awise decision, i never believed they were in danger from people in Gambia, but the web can be misused. I do think some people have a "****" attitude from day one. I enjoyed the pictures and when i get a chance will put mine on the web. |

Peace, Tolerance and sharing please. Yet again Bev has experienced personal attacks for her honesty.
Is it up to the administrators to decide what is put on Bantaba ?
Do not despair Bev - It will pass (again)

Just back from a few weeks in Gambia. I'll see about posting a few shots when I get time.
