“Additional Tourism Development Areas,” SOS Colley
Bubacarr K. Sowe

The Secretary of State for Tourism and Culture, Angela Colley has said that to promote the development of quality tourist facilities up country, her department, in its Tourism Development Master Plan, will create additional tourism Development areas, the majority being in the rural areas.
“The Department of State and the Gambia Tourism Authority will also encourage investment in ecologies and other forms of tourist accommodation along the banks of The River Gambia”, SOS Colley said.

She was responding to a question from Hon Bora Mass, the Member for Kiang East, who asked for what plans her Department was making to improve the provincial tourism industry, which could reduce unemployment in the provinces.
SOS Colley said: “We feel that in order to give the tourists a fuller picture of The Gambia, and to enable the experience of the true and real Gambia, we must sample the hospitality of the entire country”.
The Secretary of State added that the benefits of tourism trade must not only be restricted to the urban areas, but must also spread to the rural areas to help provide jobs and improve the livelihoods of the rural population.

A positive step in the right direction Minister Colley. Jambo it seems they are listening after all it's just a pity they don't consult architects of such plans to include them into the planning cut and paste still seems to be the name of the game. After all anyone can take ideas and run with them but only few can germinate seeds tend to plants, and nurture them to they bear healthy fruit. I hope with Minister Colley she will not overlook those minds who can make a real difference. You know my e-mail Minister Colley. Yes folks I'm blowing my own trumpet. If I don't who is going to do it for me eh!

I will blow it Sister! even though I dont' agree with everything you say your arguements are always well reasoned, good idea, BUT as usual roads are the problem,no large scale operator would invest big money in a tourist facility weather it be Eco or other, without GOOD roads,I do feel that now roads have been seen to be important to the government they will no longer stand for skimpy and substandard work and materials that have been used in the past flooding at Ebo town for instance, small operators may take a risk with a few buildings.

Roads, Roads, please do not get me started on that one, some visitors would love to be independent and go to juffeh, or jangjabureh, put roads, transportation, water all need to be sorted. that road to Roots is a disgrace.

Hi Jambo New roads well I suppose you have a point however The River Gambia being put to better use would ease congestion and pollution on Gambia roads. Also give Gambia an big advantage as far as Carbon Offsetting goes. The whole organisation of Roots needs to be reorganised to allow proper investment to benefit the infrastructure for the community in Juffure and beyond. Roots has become nothing more than a great big shambles. Its primary weakness has those in control of it have superinflated egos and little substance.

Gambia River offers excellent opportunity for those who like fishing, eco-tourism and senior citizen tourism especially younger retired population.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

I had the pleasure of travelling along with gambia river by boat and land transportation. Most coming to gambia spending time in senegambia are missing the great experience.

turks that a fact, i have travelled so many times to gambia and as a tourist want to take a river trip as far as possible, it like pulling teeth to arrange. they do not push these tours that often, so i said i would travel with a fishing group or something just to see the riverbanks and enjoy the day, still its hard to organise. a great shame that people do not get this opportunity to see gambia this way/

Greetings Everyone,

I've experienced a short trip along the Gambia from Denton Bridge to Lamin Lodge it was a beautiful experience. I've also crossed over from Jang-Jangbureh to wassau stone circles and across the estuary to Barra, and of course from Juffure to James Island always by traditional canoe. There is really no good reason for the River Gambia not to be used. It is just the lacklustre of the administration that hasn't put river travel further up the agenda of development.

No one would disagree about the underuse of River Gambia BUT there are more factors to be considered ,we are talking about tourism ,like it or not tourists expect different standards,to expect someone coming from a westernised country where different standards of saftey and craft apply to river transport,is just not on,if river transport was in a craft that tourists understood things would be different but to make such a boat that the tourist would be happy with would be such a cost that very few Gambians could afford.

jambo the River Gambia is on e of the most navigatable rivers in the world. Therefore with investment there is no reason why people cannot travel up and down the length of the river. Toubab1020 if I'm not mistaken there are ferries in the western world which could be recommissioned and put into service to serve the tourist sector. Also we need to have sustainable tourism so motorised boats which reach international speciifications ia not too far beyond the imagination is it? Seriously where there is a will there is away. It is just a matter of thinking big!

Sure are sister , but I am sure that you remember the smashing nearly new ferry that went from Banjul Port to Senegal about 4 years ago? is it still going oh No. I think somebody big tried that, but he was not allowed to make that buisness work ,why I dont Know.
So until the climate for allowing people to make decent money from their investments in The Gambia comes about, Gambia will stagnate and remain the same all Talk and no action very sorry but that is perhaps a cultural thing between Africa and Western countries.MANY people have tried buisness and poured their hard EARNED money into Gambian enterprises all for nothing,All take No give.

Nearly right Toubab, two companies tried and both lost Millions of dalasi's. One catamaran came from Malta, and a boat from Europe. Both are rotting in Banjul today, having had a lot of things stolen.
Lots of Gambians were employed and lost their jobs within one month.
All due to red tape and corruption.
I met both Gambians involved in the ventures, they are now working out of the country.
Some friends of mine tried to revive one of the projects, but to no avail. Good luck to anyone who tries

Tom ,I am very pleased that you added your posting to this topic as if you hadn't some people may have thought that such things as I mentioned did not happen ,Gambians must want to join the modern world if they are to benefit from improvements,if they don't want modern things and want to be left alone again fine.Making a buisness in Gambia is fraught with problems,be carefull.
