Are you watching Live Earth at tv this particular day, 07.07.07? Itīs broadcasted by BBC all over the world from concerts taking place in 8 cities on 7 continents. 2 billion people are supposed to watch. Itīs all about to make us aware of that our climat is in crisis combined with information about how to save our earth. I wonder how much this gigantic arrangement itself contributes to the global warming? A guy working with WWF said something worth considering: We usually see the groving economy in China as a problem if they adopt our life style, while the Chines say that the Western world is the problem, we in China are not going to adopt the careless way of living and using the earth. In China there are much optimism and itīs a challenge to find solutions, accoding to him. A bit contradictionary as China is said to be no. 1 contributor to the global upwarming.
What about the music? The concert from Sidney was good, and the concerts from Tokyo and Shanghai very interesting but London has been boring so far. Am looking forward to concert from Johannesburg and hoping to see Baaba Maal. The person from WWF who partly lives in Shanghai said that the Chines music market is huge and they listen to every kind of music, traditional Chinese, punk, South American,Techno, Spanish, every kind of music has itīs audience. He also claimed that Chinese people freely speak out their minds but writing is controlled.

I found some of the music worth listening to - but not all of it. All a bit one sided, I think
I find the ethics behind it interesting. There is no doubt that all those fading pop stars with thier personal jets will have contributed to global warming and all those lights for the stadiums - but I guess they'll get the publicity they want.....
But what interests me more is that I read somewhere that the biggest contributors to global warming are not people but the militaries around the world who, with their jets, tanks, bombs etc, contribute way more than 50%.... |

sister lily ,you are right. the concert will increase awareness but will it lead to any significant change in peoples life style ? will the fourwheel drives reduces ? will military spending decrease ? in recent months the u.s has triple its military spending ,which will tricker the russian to increase theres and the europeans ,well what about the chinise ? so the musicians can entertain and educate but the policy makers go about doing what the dam want. the u.k is on target but will it stay there ? the many cars on the road . yesterday the debate was about to be taking another tune ,.some acadamics are now saying the problem is population growth ..typical we all know where that will lead ,third world. |

All points to cover up the military expansions....
And I also read that global warming is a theory. Not yet proven - though I guess none of us will be around to see if it's true or not!
The idea being that if we all have something big to worry about like global warming/climate change - or even population growth - we don't notice all the other things going on like wars, developing western ideology, observation culture (UK now being the mosr observed population in the world..) and so on. |

I think they, or we, concentrate too much on petty things, turn off the lights, switch off your tv-set, walk to your local farmer to buy your potatoes, to make us feel guilty. This gala alone consumed more electricity than I do in my life time. (Maybe Momodou should check if the iceberg still is there?) We should ask what factories and manufacturers could do, and why not military industry, as Lily said. If Mr Bush ceased the war in Iraq, he would make a double contribution |

A note from my daily paper: Live Earth gala produced at least 31 500 tons carbon dioxid, which is more than three thousand times more than an average Briton does annually. |

As a scientist I long had my doubts on the global warming, because there have been fluctuations in our geological history. However since a few months I saw that much proves (statistics, measurements, climatological and biological data) that Im quiet convinced about the phenomenon. What we can do about it. Well thats tough. In the first place I think we are with to many, but that seems to be a discussion no one wants to go for. Our globe cant recover enough on a natural way of our way of living. All ecosystems are able to recover from the influences of a species (in this case man) as long as there is enough left where the system can go its natural way. On a global scale there is not enough left.
Specifically on the CO2 issue I fear there is no return. The huge amounts of carbon which were fixed by natural processes during million of years in different geological periods (Jura, Perm, Carbon,
) as charcoal, oil and gaz have almost totally (mis)used in about 150 years and are blown into the atmosphere. So Im quiet pessimistic about it. Or the world population has to reduce significantly or all of us must reduce the consumption of (not renewable) resources even more ( we are not speaking here about 10 % but about 90 %)

Jack, you said we are too many people on this earth. As a scientist, what are you going to do about it?
What are the consequences of discharges of carbon dioxide and global warming? Some scientist predict that there will be a new ice age over the Scandinavia if the icebergs melt down. (I donīt understand the logic.) Others say that the climate in Scandinavia will be more like the Mediterranean used to be, with pleasant weather and possibilities for two harvests per year for some crops. Southern Europe in turn will be more like Africa, dry and arid.
Floods and heavy rains are going to be customary as we see just now, not only in Britain but also in some southern parts of Sweden. Rains have caused more than one hundred damages to roads and house owners have reported more than 3000 water damages. Tropical parts of the earth are going to meet with even more rains while other parts will be more dry with spreading desserts.
Instead of looking forward to brighter future Africans have to face even more hardship.
A Spanish EU representative (cant remember who) said that if we dont try to put things right (carbon pollution and greenhouse effect) we have no right to stop them (Africans) coming.
There is a lot of space in Sweden! A lot, really.
What do you think?
