The Gambia Echo online newspaper has an article about GNA activity and whitewashing this old British fort, very strange goings on.

Serenata, you said 'easy', but you meant 'simple' which is good!
Strange story, what is the whitewashing good for (though any building looks better and fresher after a good whitewash).

Yes, but Fort Bullen is a part of our history and to apply whitewash to any historical building makes it lose some of its history, how about whitewashing the Eiffel tower? OK Fort Bullen is a military installation thats what our Colonial masters the English built it for,so it has now been occupied again by the Military, and as is generally known in the Army if it dosn't move paint it white, if it moves salute it.

That sounds better than 'if it moves, shoot it'. Couldn't it be that the original building was whitewashed after building it (like some of these old forts in the Caribean area)? So that this was a kind of restoration? Whitewashing the Eiffeltower is a spectacular idea. I'm sure it will be coated from time to time, though - just to keep it from rusting.

Last year (September 2006) The National Centre for Arts and Culture received a grant from the US Ambassador to do restoration of the fort. Could it not be that this is what has been going on?

"The works to be implemented with the grant funds include:
-Restoration of the Sea Defence at Fort Bullen
-The development of a site museum at Fort Bullen
-The conversion of a Guardhouse into a souvenir shop
-Consolidation of parapet walls and walks at the Six-Gun Battery and Fort Bullen, respectively."

Yes maybe, but I doubt if the soldiers would be happy having a guardhouse that was a souvenir shop,"Excuse me please can I get to the shells,I think they are behind the pottery."

Last month it has been written in Gambian papers that the Gambia National Army has a construction company called "Army Security Services Engineering Company (ASSEC)" and they had a contract on the construction of a school in Manyok. Could it be that they are the ones responsible for this renovation of fort bullen?

Fort Bullen is already on UNESCO's world heritage listing and I doubt if that status can be drastically changed.

I visited the site, and it is true. It is not a mare white washing or re-construction.The soldiers have taken over Fort Bullen.

Since the military coup in July 1994 led by Jammeh, Chairman of the revolution, everything in Gambia is military. Not for one moment is Jammeh going to change his military orientation and conduct. To him the army serves to kill. Fort Bullen is another military fortification because Jammeh believes only military power will unseat him. He fails to reckon the potentials of cyber power. It is space power that has highest prospects of unseating Jammeh, at a time he never dreams of it.

Yeks, thank you! I had my doubt due to the grant from the US last year to renovate the Fort but you now confirm the article.
