The sycophancy does not seem to end. I read this observer article with scepticism knowing it has been reported that this area is one of the hardest hit with regards to HIV. Lets all hope that all donated blood is screened of HIV before distribution to the rest of the country.

Blood Donation Campaign in Kanilai

The Daily Observer (Banjul)
By Salifu M. Touray

A blood donation campaign recently kicked-off in Kanilai, the birth-place of President Yahya Jammeh.

The three-day blood donation campaign, organised by the Kansala Trust, a district based organisation comprising 42 villages in collaboration with the Department of State for Health, is the medical cultural part of the Kanilai International Festival.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Tamsir Mbowe, Secretary of State for Health and Social Welfare thanked President Jammeh for supporting the blood donation and all those who participated in the campaign designed to save lives.

SoS Mbowe further underscored the importance of the blood donation campaign noting that blood is very vital to life. He added that the choice of Kanilai as the venue for the campaign is quite fitting due to the fact that it is one of the historical medical towns in The Gambia that has been rendering services for generations and saving the lives of many Gambians.

He then revealed that the blood collected would be distributed to medical facilities countrywide..........

In Gambia how are HIV stats collected? Who is tested ? Is it free will or compulsary?

The expected result would be that in the tourist area there will be more cases and at the end of the Gambia there will be more cases. I have no idea if the stats show this.

At the coast people are drawn to the tourist trade who are prepared to have sex, tourist trade workers, prostitutes and young people just sucked in to the life. Also tourists arrive from europe bringing in their behaviours and infections.

AT the end of the Gambia (eaastwards) I understand there is a big high way that trucks use to travel through African countries. If these men travel freely and arent tested for HIV they could be a major source of infection. They are away from home and will sleep with prostitutes.

I hope for Gambias sake that HIV doesnt get hte same hold as it has doen in other African countries.

Any other ideas about how to slow it down?????

Kanilai is the wrong place to collect donated blood. This an extension of Jammeh's killer programme. Perceived enemies can have HIV/AIDS sufferers' bad blood transfused to speed their death.

Informing the prostitutes would be an excellent idea. Does anybody know if the government or health care organisations in Gambia are doing this? I read that one reason why HIV didn't spread too much in Europe was the good information given to prostitutes, and their relatively consequent refusal of unprotected sex.

The road fom Kenya to Uganda is known as 'HIV-Highway'. Many truckers going this highway have 'steady' prostitutes, and because they are something like boyfriends to the women, they never use condoms when they visit them. It is madness. These men later infect their wives, who give the disease to the newborn children etc.

If Kanilai is really one of the regions with the highest HIV rates, one should make an official enquiry if the blood is screened or not. A small country like Gambia can be thoroughly infected very quick, and Jammeh's carelessness with HIV seems to be a real danger.

The German government recommends for Germans (and others) who stay in SeneGambia for a longer while to depose their own blood at a hospital or at a doctor in case a transfusion should be necessary. They write "HIV/AIDS is a big problem in Gambia and a great danger for all who take the risk of infection: Sexual contacts, contaminated syringes or needles and blood transfusions can be extremely dangerous" (www.auswaertiges-amt.de).

Before Jammeh's coup of July 1994, Kanilai was already high impact area for HIV/AIDS. Since Jammeh established the little kingdom of Kanilai, the village is a resort for loose men, women, and particularly youth. There is reason to believe that with the regular occasions of dancing and drumming programmes in Kanilai, unprotected sex is a driving factor for many of those who attend these endless programmes. The president (Jammeh) wants to grow a population in the little village and many people take advantage of the free life facilities. The sexually active youth population find the place attractive especially when you pay nothing but lip service as being a green boy/man/girl (the secret murder squad in the service his Excellency, Doktorr Jammeh.) Kanilai serving as blood collection point exposes Gambian population to higher risks HIV/AIDS contaminated blood. This is simply by Jammeh extending his tentacles of absolute control at all cost (to life and property.)
