Dell is trying a second time to sell personal computers with Linux pre-installed, this time using the up-and-coming Ubuntu version of the open-source operating system.

My question is: Are you going to buy one? Will this begin to turn the tide of the industry? Yes, I know Dell has tried this before, but market conditions are continually changing.

Personally I am not buying any. I mean why should I? I can download the OS free and install it on a three year old PC. Besides, the OEM Windows costs you less than buying a retail one, while the OEM Linux will cost you more than downloading yourself.

The economics involved doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Ous i think so long as the big boys are coming in on Linux its a good start, it will all change one day. you will then be able to buy PCs and choose which OS you want on it, and they can all talk to each other easily.

just like today we can surf the net using either Explorer, Firefox , etc!
this is what computing is about! imagine if all our roads were built only for Ford or VW. people must have a choice.

can u download the latest Ubuntu for me and send it to me, i'm a true Suse fan but i want to try it. i'll post you my address on a private message!

Njucks,
Send me your address in private and I will send you the CD.

On a different note,it looks like Microsoft is trying to put a wrench in the open source GPL. Their pact with Novell vis-a-vis Suse is not favorably seen in the open source community. The lead developer for samba quit Novell to protest against the deal. Today we got news that Dell is joining this Microsoft, Novell Suse camp, even though they chose to preload ubuntu on their machines.

If i am a betting man, I would wager on Suse. It has some huge mooolah pushing its sails. Ubuntu is financed by some heavy hitters as well. Shuttlesworth is putting millions of his wealth to make it successful. So far his efforts are paying off big time. So Ubuntu might be the David in this fight.

Over all you are right. Choice is a good thing. The more the merrier.

Toubab1020,
I don't know what to say. I am a techie and thus the convulted nature of my writting. Plus I assume most people reading this thread have a fairly good technical know how. But I digress. That is naivety on my part. Like they say in this part of the world...my bad.

what we are discussing is about open source software and Proprietary software. in the first the computer code of the operating system is available free to download and anyone can change/modify it so long as they make their version freely available too.

in Proprietary software, the computer code is locked/not accessible like in Windows. you can't change it. the problem is not which is better (that depends what you use it for) it's having all PCs coming with one pre-installed. it makes someone very rich, and i mean very.

for example if my problem is to make PCs available to every gambian i have a better chance setting up a small company here, running a locally made/specially designed operating system fit for old computers which are abundant here and more affordable than brand new PCs with Windows already pre installed in them!!

furthermore as Ous said there are several people (mullahs ) out there writing free codes and making it available freely for any one to use. but then you can't get these codes if your PC comes with something else pre-installed!!

Linux is just one version, writen by what was then a student at the univeristy of Helsinki in Finland. today millions of people and companies have modified the code and providing solutions, and they can all talk to each other easily.

so in a nutshell thats what we talking about, the version of Linux I use is called Suse, has its roots from a small German company but its now owned by the an american company. as ous said Microsoft has a ''deal'' with this american company.

I hope i get the cd from him soon, 'cos I think I smell whats going on. but then I have a choice.
