I completed my medical degree last year at the Medical University of Southern Africa.I would like to get an opportunity to work in the Gambia,as my country of descent. What are your suggestions forumites in terms of conditions of work?.Of course having trained in South Africa, the conditions here are far much advanced than most African countries.

Hi Che, have you made any decision about working at a gambian hospital? I spent some time at the Royal victoria hospital last year, with my friend who is a gambian nurse and it was definately different to uk hospitals. At that time there were only Cuban doctors at the hospital, but i believe there are now the new gambian doctors.
I don't think that the money is very good, but if you can live on a small amount of money then you should do it. Good luck, let me know how you get on, i'd love to work there but can't afford to live on the small wages. |

Molly could you do something through VSO? I am thinking about it.
We have our 'home' stuff to deal with: houses. mortgages, children, parents, pensions etc.
But at the end of the day we walk this planet once. There is no rehearsal, we don't regret what we did, but what we left undone.
I am hoping to work towards extended periods of time in the Gambia.

GambiaBev, i would love to do soemthing through the VSO, but have never seen any placements for nurses in the Gambia as yet. I really like your theory about regretting what we left undone, its very true. Its just a case of being strong enough to make these life changing decisions, especially when we are used to european standards and having well paid jobs. Let me know how you get on with your VSO application, i wish you lots of luck. |

The South African hospitals are up to date especially the private institutions. They are a marvel to work in,considering their status compared to the other african countries. You should consider visiting SA one day. |
