In my experience self interest rules. For example I was bringing in mobile phones for teachers in the villages. This was so they could keep intouch with their family and discuss things with other local teachers. I explained that as I came through customs. I said I have been donated the phones and will be giving them away. They still pressed me for money. I didnt have any spare money. So they insisited in taking a phone. That is even before I got into the country. No wonder some people are put off helping!! |

It seems most if not all conspire to get as much money as possible at the end of the day. I have observed that they are mostly interested in knowing how many cell phones you brought so that they can get a bribe. |

Why custom they can get fix prices to their taxes? as you going for holidays they tried to keep something for you, the last time i been, i took 2 DVD's for my family as a gift, a custom officer asked me if am having DVD's, i answer yes, i got 2, and he asked me to pay D2000, for it, i asked him why should i pay for it, he said for the tax, and i said i should paid for the present i bought for my family 2, he told me, then is ok give me D1700 then, i was surprised and i looked for change and i give him D1700, then i went up to the door, i realize that he didn't gave me my recipe, i went back to asked him my recipe, he was anger with me and throw the money i gave him on the table and said to me that i have to pay more then, if i needed a recipe, i was not feeling good, as am with my husband and i was ashamed, in my own country, i just pay him and wait for my recipe, he gave me the recipe, and i went home, i was explaining the matter and i took out the recipe, was D1000 in it. |

Ironically when I arrived in Gambia I had two mobile phones and I declared them. Even before the Custom officer tried anything I told him that I paid for them once and I ain't paying for them again. I had no problem. In fact on the way back a custom officer exchanged e-mail addresses with me. Different strokes for different folks it just goes to show that everyones experience is different.
Peace

i do not have a problem paying the tax in gambia, at leaset it is in the country but to pay it to does anyone know were it goes, how much is collected. on my next trip it is included, does the gambian government give them an invoice, it might not amount to much but these small amounts could help the economy |

Well i send a big boxes to gambia and i paid 350e for it, was just a medicin for gambia hospital to help.
if you can find whose people making those deal, might be better, maybe, i like to sent things with them, b'cos it's save and you won't pay again in the gambia. am thinking to buy cements here, as it's more cheaper than gambia. |
