Ten alleged sex workers, charged with rogue and vagabonds offence, were on Monday discharged by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates' Court.
The discharged women who pleaded not guilty were among fifty five alleged prostitutes who appeared before the court last Friday. Forty-two were on Friday sent to seven days in jail after pleading guilty to a charge rogue and vagabonds contrary to section 167 (d) of the Criminal Code.
Before releasing the accused persons, whom he remanded in custody on Friday, Magistrate Jammeh said it is possible they are not guilty, but they were at a wrong place and time. In a separate development, one of the accused persons, who appeared before Magistrate Abdoulie Mbackeh, has been released on bail in the sum of 500 dalasis and must provide a Gambian surety. Like her discharged colleagues, the woman on bail did also plead not guilty to being a rogue and vagabond. She should appear in court on March 19th.
