I've been enjoying Jamaican food for many years now thanks, initially, to the kindness of some friends in Bristol who either themselves themselves of Afro/Caribbean origin or had partners who were.

Most of them, whether Muslim or not, prefer to buy their meat in Halal butchers as the meat is said to be fuller flavoured and therefore more authentic. Also, there are a lot of delicious vegetarian Jamaican recipes (especially Rastafarian ones as some Rastafarians are vegetarian).

When I last visited The Gambia I made 'chicken rice and peas' for my boyfriend and some of his friends (it was one of the first meals that came to mind when I was presented with the problem of having to produce a meal for several people on one gas ring). They all seemed to enjoy it though I got the feeling that the proportion of meat to rice was larger than they are used to.

Maybe when you are in the West Country Santanfara maybe you'd like to call in for a bite to eat :-D

My favorite Carribean food is Oxtail with rice and peas, man! Curry goat is good too. Hmmm, what about jerk chicken; red snapper; Aki and salt fish; Don't forget to wash it down with home-made ginger beer.

Thanks!

Mouthwatering, SisterO! Too bad there's no opportunity for me to try all the delicacies you mention. Seems to be time at least for a trip to UK.

Sadly it is alcoholic :-(

But hey what about sorrel or nutriment?

Apart from juices (of course) I never developed much of a taste for Caribbean drinks. I don't drink alcohol (much!) and found most other drinks sweet to the point of being cloying.

Kondorong on the contrary Jamaican Sorrel or wunju is very nutritious and has good healing qualities.http://www.src-jamaica.org/newsfeatures/sorrel_nutraceutical.htm

Leokat you are right Guiness Punch is alcoholic sorrel. For those who obstain nutriment is good without guiness, carrot juice, sorrel without alcohol is good, so is cucumber juice, pineapple and grapfruit Jamaican style are also delicous.

peace
