This HIV cure debacle is now becoming a real embarassment not only to Gambia, but to the entire African continent as a whole. In this day and age to have the president of a sovereign nation displaying such a terrible ignorance of the methods of scientific inquiry, and have ministers tagging themselves as doctors endorsing such claims is clearly irresponsible and just gives an excuse to those who already have a low esteem about Subsaharan Africans to justify their disregard.
It is not only a matter of national shame, but clearly a matter of racial shame. It provides fodder for the perpetuation of all the negative stereotypes people have of black Africans like my self. If Jammeh alone had made this statement, he would just have been disregarded for the gun toting imbecile that he is. But to think that he leads a nation that has a university where medical doctors are trained just adds insult to injury.
Is there nobody in the Gambia to tell this buffoon to just keep quiet? To think about all the time notable international dignitaries, scientists, entertainers and others have spent trying to inform the world about the threat this pandemic poses to the future of mankind and have a ridiculous figure like the Gambian so called President make these claims based solely on the primitivity of his own upbringing is a real travesty.
Gambia is a small fine country that does not deserve this kind of publicity. The people are intelligent, friendly and forward looking. I just hope people realise that Jammeh epitomises the negative effects of coup d'etats and help promote proper democratic institutions |
