I have been warned that if you buy them in UK when you come into Gambia you have to pay duty. Any electircal or solar goods have some sort of duty on them. I have never seen any official document quoting the tax, but all bags are searched on the way INTO the country now. Another chance to bribe the toubabs!!!
By the way, last time I entered Gambia there was noone collecting the £5 tourist tax. Why was that? Has it been abolished ? Or was it just because it was holiday time? |

The tourist tax at the aiport in foreign currency was stopped because implementation was a problem. It was hoped that it will generate hard currency fromthe source but it was difficult to know who paid in foreign currency and who paid in local currency.
Also because official exchange rates are always lower than the black market, it naturally increased a desire to qoute these taxes in local currency and as such collectors would fine a bing wind fall from the black market. It was not worth the trouble and additional staff watching over to ensure that what is collected in hard currency was what is reported.
That is what is called "economical" in tax administration. Cost of collection must not be so high that it might just not be prudent to levy the tax in the first place.
I think the tax is just levied on the ticket and reconciled at the time of payment of landing fees etc by the carrier. |
