I was informed by text last next that journalist Lamin Dibba from the Observer newspaper has been dismissed. It is to do with the reporting of the President curing HIV. He was the health correspondent. I am not sure if the President was unhappy with his reporting or if he refused to write something. I will try to find out more today. I am saddened by this. He is my guides cousin/brother, raised in the same family from different fathers. I have met him on many occasions, even visited the newspaper. He is an extremely intelligent and charismatic man. But it Gambia being a journalist is a dangerous occupation. I hope he is safe.
I have been informed that because he is dismissed from the Observer no one will employ him at another paper. It is all to do with the stories about the President curing HIV.
So now he is unemployed and unable to help his extended family. They are all frightened and feel under threat. They have NO freedom of speech. This is reality in Gambia.
He is genuinely frightened for his life and the lives of those close to him. Can anyone give me advice about what he should do?
Can he just get a flight to UK without a visa? Can he get out of Gambia without vias? If you arrive in UK without the correct papers what happens to you?
I suggested he travelled to a neighbouring African country. Is that practical and would he be safe?
Anyone who can help lease email me privately. I am concerned who is reading this.
