Notorious youth groups engaged in cowardly abduction and maltreatment of innocent citizens in Gambia call themselves 'THE GREEN BOYS' The group emerged from banned 22 July Movement. They claim they are the patriotic citizens of Gambia and great lovers of President Jammeh. Many unknown killers are suspected belonging to the GREEN BOYS. One of their men was caught recently falsely soliciting funds in the name of President's Office, posing as Permanent Secretary. This particular one appeared too much and too open to hide. The guy was docked and passed a court sentence.

Howsson Cham, Co-ordinator of the Green Boys and Girls, a youth group of the ruling APRC party, was yesterday sentenced to three months imprisonment after being found guilty on charges of obtaining money by false pretence and impersonation.

Delivering his judgement in a well crowded court room, Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh said ‘seeking donation is not a crime but expressed concern with the way the accused person went ahead to impersonate the Permanent Secretary, Office of the President .

The Magistrate said that the Office of the President is not an office to play with, “if you claim to be a supporter of the government as you portray, you should respect the Office of the President. You cannot make mockery of this office,” the Magistrate stated.

He further indicated that Mr Cham’s actions are totally intolerable and can cause Mr Sulayman Tarawally (Permanent Secretary, Office of the President) his job as a public servant.

Magistrate Jammeh, then said that the accused person cannot be free because the APRC party condemns such evil deeds. He therefore sentenced Mr Cham to one month in jail, on Count One and 2 months in jail on Count Two.

On Count Two, the accused on the same date at Ultrasoft Company Limited impersonated himself as the Permanent Secretary, Office of the President, a representation which appears to be false.

According to the particular of the offence, Mr Howsson Cham, between December 2006 to January 15, 2007, obtained the sum of D8000 from the Proprietor and Manager of Ultrasoft Printing, on the pretext that he was going to buy Jersseys for the Green Boys and Girls Football Club.

Culled from the point Newspaper.

The highlighted statement of the Magistrate is unfortunately a political statement. How does he know that the APRC does not condone such behaviours. That is not infact important. Him believeing the same to be true is a political statement and the Judiciary should be seen to be fair and just and not use the bench to make political statements.
