TRUE?

http://sudanwatch.blogspot.com/2006/01/sudan-withdraws-candidacy-for-au.html

The question affecting all Africa: Is Omar Al-Bashir a good choice as chairman of the Africa Union - considering that his regime has been variously charged with GENOCIDE in DARFUR ???

At the OIC meeting in June the OIC fully backed the government of SUDAN...think: Darfur brothers and sisters, DARFUR.

Sudanese head's AU candidacy questioned
The Democratic Alliance on Sunday urged President Thabo Mbeki and other African leaders not to make Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir chairman of the African Union.

"Selecting a notorious human rights violator like al-Bashir will set the AU and Africa's cause back in the most significant and negative way," Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon wrote in a statement.

It would, in effect, make al-Bashir, who stands accused of genocide in Darfur, titular head of the AU peacekeeping troops in Sudan's Darfur region.

"This would make it impossible for the United Nations... to assume any kind of meaningful role in restoring peace and stability..."

Blocking Sudan's candidacy for the AU chairmanship would also afford South Africa the chance to redeem itself after its recent decision to vote against a United Nations security council vote condemning human rights violations in Burma, said Leon.

Al-Bashir is suspected of giving governmental support and money to Islamic militias, the Janjaweed, to fight rebels in Darfur who oppose the Sudanese government.

The militias have been accused of ethnic cleansing. An estimated 200 000 people have been killed and another two million displaced in a conflict that has spilt over into neighbouring Chad and the Central African Republic. - Sapa

the man is a good choice. there are other people commiting genoside dayly and bring all sorts of restriction on people base on racism and apartied system and this government are never condemned. so if you say worst of basir ,say the truth to all forms of oppression. don't pick and choose we all know what is happening with darfur.
oil and rebels and who is sponsoring the rebels. haven't some countries just level another country to ground whiles the international comminetee stand muted. that was another form of genoside. it is call halachic state creation. and the plan is call yigal.opperession is all the same.

I agree that Al-Bashir should not take up the Chairmanship of the African Union. The Darfur crisis needs to be solved and Al-Bashir regime needs to be made accountable for its crimes against humanity. The AU should nominate another country in the region to stand for the Chairmanship. To send out a over-resounding message of Zero tolerance to Ethnic Cleansing, genocide and Crimes against Humanity. By Electing Al Bashir the AU is condoning the mass murder of African civilians. There needs to be a line drawn in the sand where Leaders like AL-Bashir only reward is to be brought to justice for his crimes. It is my hope that the AU leaders suspend his nomination and rotate the chair to another country within the region i.e CHAD who has given refuge to Sudanese refugees or Gibouti a successful thriving small nation of Africa or others more suitable for chairmanship. But definitely No to Sudan under its present leadership. To nominate him as chair would put the African Union in disrepute and mire its image. These leaders need to think very seriously about the longterm reprecussions to elect this man chair he is not worthy.

Sister,
I hope he does not. This may should be brought to a court and tried. I do not understand the Africans in this case. Does he feel African or Arab? The person salughtering the Africans and calling himself AraŽb is not fit to lead the Union. I hope there are some leaders who protest to this.

Santafara show some maturity and deal with the issue at hand and place it into prespective and context. Let's have a serious debate on this serious issue. The Gambian elections comes under Gambian politics not world politics.
