DEFENCE CALLS FOR OPEN ACCESS TO COURT MARTIAL

Lamin S. Camara, defence counsel for some of the accused persons at the General Court Martial, at the Yundum Military Barracks, on Saturday told the court that the venue of the trial should not be restricted only to the wives of the suspects.
Lawyer Camara submitted that other family members of the accused persons wish to attend the court proceedings, but security arrangements had barred some of them from coming to court last week.
"It is supposed to be an open court, but only their wives are allowed as at now," Camara noted.
Secondly, Camara added that the wives of the accused persons are having little time during visits at the prisons. "Three minutes is too short," he said.
The Judge Advocate, Justice Agim said the court is an open court and that means every Gambian should have access to the court, assuming that they do not upset the proceedings. On the time the wives have with the accused husbands, Justice Agim said they should be allowed access to their wives, since they are yet to be proven guilty. He promised that things will be put right and told Mr. Camara that his clients should know that there are regulations they need to obey and do not have to abuse them.
