Man Assumed to be Gambian Found Dead in SN Brussels Plane Tuesday 16th January 2007
By Maarten Rabaey in Belgium
A man in his twenties believed to be a Gambian stowaway was found dead yesterday morning by a technician at the Brussels Airport, Belgium.
He was wearing a Banjul airport jacket, so it is assumed he was working there or he took the jacket to infiltrate the airport. He apparently had climbed into the space above the wheels of the plane of SN Brussels Airlines just before the plane left Banjul for Dakar and then flew further to Brussels.
He didn’t survive the flight, as temperatures went down till minus 50 C and there was not enough air so high in the sky.

Sister
There was about a dozen chinese who also suffocated in a freezer truck trying to enter the UK some years ago. They were loaded in a tomato filled truck and died of suffocation. It was in the news in the UK. |

It could be same person. I first learnt of this incident on the Senegalese web portal.Only to read from Freedomnewspaper that he was gambian. Anyway, SN brussels leaves Banjul for Brussel via Dakar. It could have been either. |

Eve, You are right. SN Brussels flights do not go through Dakar sometimes. The guy is from Gambia. If he is Gambian or not it is left to know. RIP |

afrol News, 15 January - The airliner SN Brussels officials have confirmed that a deceased human body has been found inside the main gear wheel well of an Airbus A330-300 operating from the Gambian capital Banjul via Senegal. This is the second deadly incident in a short time, probably induced by emigration attempts from Senegal and The Gambia.
The flight, SN 204, landed in Brussels at the airport weekend.
According to 'Flightglobal.com', SN is reported to be cooperating fully with the Belgian investigators to uncover the story.
The incident followed another case of a dead stowaway in the main wheel of a Boeing 767 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta international airport on Friday. Flight DL 035, owned by Delta Airlines, originated from Dakar.
In a statement, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation described the deceased as a young black male in his twenties whose death might have been caused by asphyxia. He was believed to be squeezed by the landing gear shortly after take off.
Without any identification documents, the man's nationality could not be established. And authorities of both Senegal and The Gambia are yet to issue a statement as to whether their nationals were involved in the incidents.
A similar incident happened in June 2005 when a man died soon after the flight of South African Airways originating in Johannesburg took off from Dakar. And as the plane was preparing to land, the man's body parts fell onto a home near JFK airport in New York.
These incidents are believed to be desperate attempts to leave Senegal and The Gambia for greener pastures in North America or Europe while most other emigration routes are being sealed off. It is not believed that is possible to survive a flight outside an airplane, not the least because of the thin and extremely cold air at the heights these aircrafts are flying.

Any updates on the assumption that the dead man found in Brussels is in fact Gambian? If so has the body been formally identified and delivered to the concened family members? Can anyone confirm what the final situation is. |

I don´t know about the case in Brussels, but the body of an African found at Atlanta Airport only two days earlier is still unidentified.
The autopsy found his chest had been compressed, probably by the landing gear, causing the man to suffocate |
