Anyway - Karamba says that at the point when Captain Jammeh took over by that blood-less coup, the Gambia was at the pinnnacle of fame as a functioning Human Rights democracy.

Why then was the coup so popular or at all necessary?

I asked Karamba the same question over a week ago but he has not seen fit to answer my query.

I trust Sir that you will do so in a clear and concise manner.

Cornelius,
I think only the people who staged the coup could answer the question. You are quite right, it was popular amd neccessary because of disatisfaction. Otherwise there would not have been so much support. Many people taught Jammeh would continue as Jawara. He would have been out by now if he did. We need one like Jammeh in the Gambia. There are things that must be changed and I am sure this will come soon. I am sorry if some of you feel offended. In fact I would have been more taughter than Jammeh if I were to rule Gambia. Too much law breaking without any conviction.

Hey Corneilus! did you just insult our ex-president or is it a miss-spelling. Please state your position clear ASAP. The last thing I will do is not standby watching a foriegner insulting a father figure of my country.

I do not oppose unity but I oppose dumb union.

Cornelius,

Asking why the coup was POPULAR ?

Human society is a dynamic composition. Give anything chance to grow, that is also a chance to change. Take yourself as example. You prefer to be happy. Some times you are happy. Other times your happiness is snatched away by alternating feelings. You never get to a position of total happiness or total sadness. Society is a larger form of that reality. When things go wrong, those who bear the steering are blamed for it. The next thing anyone wants is to change from something bad to another thing better. If you Cornelius will today take over power and you promise to provide better life for people of Gambia, you will be greeted with jubilant salutes. It is up to you fulfilling those promises or failing them sooner or later. That was/is the case of Connel Yahya James Jammeh. He promised life would turn better for Gambia and Gambians. Now many people think those promises are being failed. Another person with higher promises can win hearts at least for a while. Yes the coup could have been popular due to people's hopes. There is no guarantee that even the most sincere next president of Gambia will keep everyone satisfied. Others will still yearn for change. Let nobody take for granted that all will be perfect when Jammeh is replaced. It is about THINGS CHANGING than PEOPLE CHANGING. Hopes and fulfilment of greater prosperity and happiness to Gambian people is what matters. By the sound of what the coup leaders said when they seized power, it was believed they were sincere to the word. They criticised the Jawara government and made everyone believe whatever they said. Don't be surprised that even though coups are not what Gambians want, anyone who is able to coup Jammeh today will gain more fame than Jammeh did in 1994. I have raised elsewhere over Bantaba that Dictators hate dictatorship so long as they are part of the suffering masses. When they have control, the same person turns a dictator. Dictatorship is a temptation that some people can't resist. They see it as the sweet part of power. We often hear talks about dictators being drunken with power. Some times popularity is what dictators see. They feel they are popular and that tempts. The blend of popularity and excessive power is what becomes dictatorship. Dictators do one thing to test the pulse of society. Force of power drills them to further action. This gets to a point where what was seen as popular support turns into popular resistance. History teaches us that prolonged political popularity has the risk of breeding popular hatred and mass resistance. Remember even Hitler can call his democratically elected power. There is a real difference between Democracy and Governance. DEMOCRACY permits voting. Once winning candidate sits in power, GOVERNANCE determines whether it is dictatorship or consultative popular participation.

karamba. i go with your analyses. it surprises me very much that experience citizens like uncle coni and uncle alhasan would over simplify the jammeh popularity. any soldeir at that time would have been popular. people were fade-up with jawara so a change was needed.
democracy some times fail third world countries . we take wrong reason to mean democracy. i never for once supported the coup ,and by the way jammeh is no difference from jawara in terms of fooling gambians.they all use similar strategy of using nyaye compins, youth support groups ,chiefs and alkalolus for their power base.
once jammeh established himself ,he then surround himself with yes men/women .
true leadership is about accepting positive/negative critism, being a good servant to the communitee, keep away from status symbols, humility, no arrogance ,be a just person ,most do consultation with advicers and so on. yaya lack a lot of good leadership charactaristics.
any one who over throw him today will be even more famous.

Karamba you got it right. We should not be static but dynamic. This is what His Excellency Doctor Yaya Jammeh is doing. Our health care is changing for better, think how RVH was b4 1994 and how it is now. We have more schools, good roads, communication, to name just a few.
Changing people from one department to another and firing and hiring of people. This is in essence qualify Jammeh as a visionary leader who if we work hand in hand with Gambia will be a self reliance country. Despite the fact that we might have differences but we should work together for Gambia. We are not working for Yaya but our Homeland.

NyarikangbannaI do understand you to be joking if you are a foreigner where ever you are. Just in case you are dead serious and with a straight face:

There is only one Sir Dawda Jawara respected by all ( he lived in England for some time after he had been deposed - and I say respected by all, including those who deposed him:

http://www.statehouse.gm/jawara24june.html
There are many great prophets, Kings, statesmen and states people of this world, many ex-prime ministers and presidents too such as His Late Majesty the Emperor of Ethiopia, such as David Ben-Gurion, Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah, John F Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Ms Margaret Thatcher, Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush.
There is still only one Sir Dawda Jawara .
There are also many sources of people’s confusion, including language spellings and miss-spellings.
Find and read this:

Zechariah 9:9

And for a general understanding of some peculiar expressions that you may read or your eras may hear, check this out ( it’s all part of the simple and not so effective understanding of the language – even less humorous parts of it:

You could correctly spell ess and kindly write “ ess idioms” in the search column of Google and see what you come up with.
