Bakau UDP Candidate Arrested
Tuesday 9th January 2007

By Pa Modou B.O. Bojang & Ebrima Gillen

Mr Famara S. Bojang, the nominated candidate of the United Democracy Party (UDP) for Bakau constituency in the forthcoming National Assembly election, was reportedly arrested last Saturday.

According to our sources, Mr Bojang was picked up at his Bakau residence shortly after he was nominated last Saturday. The sources added that Famara S. Bojang is currently detained at the Wellingara Police Station.

However the reason for Mr. Bojang’s arrest could not be ascertain at the time of going to press.

When contacted, the UDP party leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, confirmed the story, charging that Famara Bojang’s arrest is politically motivated. Mr Darboe lamented that Mr Bojang is even being denied visits from family members or change of clothes. Mr Darboe therefore called on the Independent Electoral Commission to monitor the circumstances surrounding Mr. Bojang’s arrest, wondering aloud why he should be arrested now and not before his nomination.
