Santanfara, it bothers me that the opposition parties are writing off the Fonis to the extend of not putting up candidates. It is a dangerous precedence that they are setting. The fact that Yahya Jammeh is Jola and foni has turned out clearly to support him during the last few elections is no excuse for others not to consider contesting those constituencies.
If the fonis like the Fuladus are highly concentrated with one tribe why can't they put up candidates from the same concentrated tribe like they did in Fuladu, Niamina, Jarra and Kiang? If you look at the list of candidates from many of the constituencies you can see a Pattern. This is dangerous politics and it breeds sectionalism which leads to tribal conflicts.
The opposition should have selected candidates from the region to sponsor to contest the elections. Otherwise, the same Jawara politics of divide and isolate will continue as used to be the case in the Babidus during SM days. This is not acceptable for a society that claim to be above and beyond tribal lines. |

Santanfara,
This is one of the most relevant questions. It has been an issue long observed. All relates to the fact that the rest of Gambia are simply joking and people in Foni consider themselves the most fortunate. For people of Foni, the seat of presidency is seen like when a person's family member becomes chief. The way family solidarity plays in the case of chieftaincy is same way people of Foni see the seat of presidency. Before, extending further, let's get this one point clear. To give a sweeping image of Foni can be wrong. Not all in Foni want to see Jammeh ruling the way he is. They are scared to raise their voice. Anyone who dares to challenge Jammeh in Foni will have the vultures feast on his dead body. In that regard, those in Foni who wish to see Jammeh out need to be considered. After careful observation, it appears that the rest of Gambia are fools in some regard. This is no sweet potato for everyone's digest. To change that they (the rest of Gambia) can call it a protest by not choosing to vote APRC this round. Once Jammeh wins, in his private moments with Foni people close to him, they laugh at the rest of Gambia as fools. You or some other Bantaba readers may not like this view, but see if you can prove this is not the case. It is a serious matter worth all the time in Bantaba so that something is done to teach Jammeh and those few people who laugh with him once they sweep the polls by hook or by crook. |

Did you know PDOIS was once refused a rally in Foni. It was a serious issue because they dont want to see any opposition campaigning there. I guess they were avoiding a potential problem in the run up to election. That is why Shyngle Nyassi is not very popular among his kinsmen.
Gambian politics has become very sectarian and tribalistic. You can only select a Fualni candidate in areas that are Fulani speaking and so is the case with Mandinka, wollof etc. If you are from a minority tribe in a constituency you will not be selected. Some people cannot understand why Shyngle Nyassi supports UDP. |

AS the Nigerian saying goes the elders have spoken. dbaldeh, karamba and kondo i appreciate your timely contribution to this sensitive topic.as both you mr baldeh and karamba puts it ,the people in foni should realise they are making a big political mistake in staying away from multi-party politics. the fear of being label a treator for supporting any oppossition is useless and without basis. i welcome this year the number of sarahules as candidates for election .this is a big change in that tribal group. tribal politics is a sad phenomemon and unless people like you on the bantaba try to voice out this divisive tendency we will find it hard to change things. i for one believe if yaya choose a different tribe in foni ,that person will win. it is like the conservatives in England ,they put minorities in arears they wouldn't win. to change the mind set ,i ask yaya's aprc to start puting a different tribe amongst tribal groups. i say language breed familiarity ,so potential politicians should also try to speak different languages not just one language. i am now marketing myself ,kondo look for potential interested parties tell them i can speak fula, sarahule, mandinka and i am a fanafana and my first wife to be was a jola ,so some jola as well. but on a more serious note ,if one cannot communucate to electorates how can they understand you ? we don't want to speak to each other in a different language just ours. this is also a problem. if it is not late i will sponsor myself for any of the foni constituency ,it may be a waste of money but it is worth. i guess the parties are avoiding loss of revenue. i say a mental crusade is what is call for now. jarama to every body .kotorashuntey to the jolas and mamatah to mandinkas and kadodunko to the fulas.wasalam. |

This tribal issue is an epidemic in Gambia and Africa in general. I stand to be corrected, but I made calls to attention several times during the NADD breakup that it smell tribal feathers. You can only suppress the truth for so long before it shows up again some where else. As Dr. King said "Truth crushed to earth shall rise again".
If you look at the UPD/NRP nomination in Niamina for example you will see Hamat's finger prints as a few Baldeh's shows up as candidates. Instead of looking for people who are competent and upto the task they go on Cherry picking. Am sure NADD may have a similar problem, not to speak of the APRC.
This is very disturbing and it tells volume the magnitute of our political immaturity. Anytime we look like we have moved closer to the 21 century, we are reminded of politics as usual in the Jawara days.
Jola, Mandinka, Fula and whatever you call it, I say we all eat dirt by inhaling the same dust from the wind. We all eat the same expired rice and all scarvenge for a dalasi here and there. We are so unfortunate and Yahya Jammeh is in descriminate when his ax falls. My cousin jolas should only jubilate for so long before the clock turn on them.. an example is Addoulie Kujabi etc.

Kujabi is not the only one. How about James, the many chiefs and Alkalos, manlafi etc.
That is not even important. When we go to the market, we are not charged different prices based on the party we support or tribal affiliation.
Like the mandinka say: KULU KANG SUMUNA (If you urinate on the mat, it makes the whole mat wet and no one enjoys sitting on it even the person who urinated on it.)
But we can look at Gambian history and realise that seds of tribalism were planted from 1951 to 1966. Unfortunately these seeds have grown to be trees some of which are still standing. |

Baldeh, You are properly on track. Only a small number of people in this world are not sectional, tribal, racial, and all the i-a-l words. Only few people in this world recognise the HUMAN FAMILY. It takes a long journey in the progress of human society before that solid wall falls like the wall that divided East and Western Germany. This is the slowest moving aspect of civilised society.
Down to the case of Gambia, UNFAIRNESS is the ugly side of it. People are not fair neither to Jammeh, nor to themselves. Jammeh is aware that it is not him that Gambians deserve at this very crucial stage when we need salvation. He insists because of selfishness in its crooked shape. If Jammeh dies in this position, Gambians will mourn more over his failure than his death. He is aware of this. He is not seeing the country. He is seeing his self gains. It is all up to Gambians to dig themselves out of the ditch. |
