Mr. Secretary of State Visit the Mortuary in Banjul

Every human being must have an end. Death must come to all of us. The mortuary is therefore the last station human beings pass before reaching their final destination into the bowels of the earth.
What is tragic is the state of the mortuary commonly referred to as the “Death House” just opposite the BCC.

Anybody who visited the place on 2nd January, 2006 would have been struck by an offensive odour because of the lack of a cooling system to protect the dead bodies from decay and prepare them for burial. They are compelled to confront the odour without any mask or gloves to protect them. Sometimes blood can be noticed oozing out of the dead bodies. The workers willingly subject themselves to such conditions because of their firm conviction that they too will come to be like the very bodies they are taking care of.

Notwithstanding this, the living should be protected from conditions that may be injurious to their health. The SoS for Health should visit the mortuary to know its true state and create the conducive environment for the proper handling of dead bodies and the proper protection of those who have the conscience to look after the dead. Urgent action is needed to protect the workers.

Also Gamtel should take a look and smell inside! A year ago they presented a cheque for D15,000 to the mortuary ward, not a huge amount towards keeping a mortuary in good condition, but I also read that Gamtel exclusively sponsors RVTH mortuary, staff salaries and other faciities as stated in The Independent/Gamtel Boosts RVTH/January 2006 when they had publicity for handing over three steel coffins and a further D110.000.
I never did understand what Mr Touray meant when the cash was presented he said "Gamtel will organize a party for the mortuary staff & patients of its ward. The party will not only serve food & drinks,. It will serve as a motivation to improve patients health condition and staff at the mortuary. Whatever was he talking about 'patients of the ward' surely they are 'bodies'

Now,I have placed many bodies in mortuary's and cannot emphasize the importance of a standard of cleanliness, i.e. for the dignity of the deceased and for the health of the staff. I was once reported for allowing my waist length tied back hair to fall sideways and touch onto the trolley whilst transferring a body, the reason given was that I could easily pick up Septicaemia....and that was before 1986 and the horror's of HIV & AIDS etc.,
In the same article it was quoted by Mr Touray "When it comes to national issues, Gamtel is second to none" I trust that the mortuary conditions will be brought to Gamtel's attention.

The world would be a poorer place if it was peopled by children whose parents risked nothing in the cause of social justice, for fear of personal loss. (Joe Slovo - African revolutionary)
