This is interesting new in the Gambia... something positive!
20-year-old Boy Establishes Bookmaking Project Friday 22nd December 2006
By Habibu Ceesay
Omar Jarju, a 20-year-old boy residing in Faji-kunda, has established a bookmaking project, which aims at producing notebooks using local materials and tools.
Speaking recently to The Point newspaper, Omar Jarju said that the project was established on 23 November this year after he has undergone a three-month training on notebook production at Otterbindery in London, the UK.
“This school is an institution which provides training in hand-making notebooks,” Jarju said, adding that presently the project has employed about five Gambian youths.
He further said that the main aim of the project is to create employment opportunity for young Gambians.
“We are also appealing to His Excellency President Yahya Jammeh, NGOs, the private sector and individuals to help us with funds so that we can expand the project to include school children.”
The project would enable school children to make their own notebooks, he added.

Thanks for that Newfy. I have friends within that area http://www.gambiatouristsupport.com/MayRooney.htm www.gambiatouristsupport.com/Maypics.htm she has two paper mills since this write up and supplies schools with paper & books plus the tourists with handmade papercrafts. May was 23years old when she went alone to set up her project in 1998 - after a holiday in The Gambia she came home, saved some money, sold her TV, CD player, camera, books & clothes -with two thousand pounds stuffed under her foot in her trainers she took the flight & has not looked back. Eight years on she is married to a Gambian teacher and lives there with their two children, employing Gambians. Let us hope that Omar has the same success. Tourist's wanting to visit May Rooney paper mills projects can do so by visiting the GTS Office in Kololi where I know visits are arranged - maybe Omar's project could find some publicity this way if he is willing?

Gambia needs young entrepreneurs like Omar. Omar should be given all the support he deserves to succeed. I hope gambians will patronize him and buy their books from his production. Aloha All -- Amy's and Omars story is an inspiration for me to remember what can be achieved.
I wish Amy and Omar had websites, because it would be a good thing to give -- a handmade gift from the Gambia for the holidays. Maybe one day it will happen....:) Maybe they might be able to work with a Gambian who has an ebay site ??? |
