Speaker exhorts NAMs
Written by Alhagie Jobe
Monday, 11 December 2006
Blinda Bidwell, Speaker of the National Assembly, has urged National Assembly Members (NAMs) to show high degree of responsibility in the execution of their duties, as the National Assembly is a very important arm of the state.
Speaker Bidwell made this remark on Thursday after most members left the Assembly Hall for the cafeteria, while the session was in progress, which resulted in the lack of a quorum, to enable them adopt the Joint Report of the Pan-African Parliament.

The move came following the presentation of the Joint Report of the Pan-African Parliament by Halifa Sallah, Minority leader and member for Serrekunda Central. Sedia Jatta took the floor to contribute in the debate and then observed the lack of a quorum for the Assembly to debate the report and expressed dissapointment with the members of the National Assembly for their behaviour.

The move compelled the Speaker to send a message to members in the cafeteria to rejoin the session or have the Assembly adjourned, since there was no quorum to debate the report.

She then urged members to respect themselves, saying “ if you want to be respected by the people, you should first respect yourselves. This is a serious issue, if such an important sub-regional Joint Report is being debated and most members sit outside”.

God save the gambia.

Representation to the national assembly cannot and must not be reduce to a bantaba where people meet without a clue what their roles and responsibilities are.

Without the intellectual capacity to read and digest the significants of international matters, members cannot help, but stay away as they have nothing to offer. It is like lecturing 5 year olds about the importance of taking responsibility in their day acitivities.

It is an obvious degradation to have members of Parliament who cannot even read a document and understand it, much more make a sound representation for their constituents.

Gambians should demand that the national assembly procedings be aired live on GRTS so they can withness how their members represent their interest. By airing out the procedings Gambians will know the people who are competent to represent them. I am certain, we will see what happened during the Jawara days when members of paliament opted to speak in Mandinka when it was their turn to speak on the floor.

There were several incidents and I can name ex members who were asking for such favors because they did not understand what was being debated. What you see is what you get sadly...

If anyone think it is a national pride for us to have members of parliament who does not understand the role of the house, then it is a national tradegy. It is quite sad that people want a government to be run like a traditional bantaba meeting.

Gambia belongs to all gambians. Every citizen being it Jammeh, Halifa, Darboe, Kobo, Nyarikang, have a responsibility to contribute to our national endevor. Those who give nothing should expect nothing in return.

At least the likes of Hon. Churchill Baldeh are degree holders. It would be the most heinous insult for anyone to say that he has nothing, intellectually, to offer.

The fact, as communicated to me from Banjul, is that the Ayatollah is too boring, too annoying, and less charismatic.

The worst thing that can happen to a degree holder is to allow themselves to be used like drums. Hon. Baldeh may be my brother, but who cares. He let himself to be used against what is in the best interest of our nation.

Some of the worst leaders around the world are or were degree holders too. Just so you know Hon. Baldeh is not an elected member so he is there to kiss of to the dictator.

Degrees means nothing if one cannot use their brain to contribute positively towards this world.

Mr. Nyarikang (two voices) you can continue your hatred. You and only you don't realize that what is at stake is bigger than Halifa, yourself and myself.

Anyone can get a degree as Mr. Yahya Jammeh has his doctrate degree. Education comes with consciousness and responsibility, without which it comes back to hunt you. You cannot reshape yourself by trying to play double advocate. Deal with your hatred...

That is your opinion and I do want to respect since it is your entitlement. However, it is far from supporting the your statement below.

My initial point of many members lacking the political and intellectual comprehension to understand national and international issues being debated in the house validates the above point. When there is no standard as to what qualification is needed for members to contest elections, you end of getting people there who were just elected because of family or tribal affiliation. These members are only interested in getting access to diplomatic incentives to enable them to travel abroad and engage in illegal drug dealings.

The point is that our standards for the house are so low that anybody can represent their constituents. This is why the house has been reduced since the Jawara days to praise singers and rubber stamps. This is why they praise anybody who comes up with a bill without knowing the merits of the bill. Thus we are indebted to the neck so much so that we can never pay off that debt.

When the national affairs is entrusted in the hands of politicians who don't know left and right, then the country cannot go any where but down the drain.

This is why the man you hate so much, Halifa cannot be effective among such a bunch of political liabilities. Hate him or whatever, he knows what he is talking about and he does it with clarity. Gambians wish we have thousands who are willing to sacrifice like him.

Baldeh, a prophet is never welcomed in his homeland i guess. It was this same report that was internationally commended , more so at the Pan African Parliament were the name Halifa Sallah was exulted to celebrity status and the man is held to a high esteem among his peers. This triggered Jammeh and the bunch of *****s surrounding him into a fit of jealousy and drove them to do everything in their power to get rid of him from the African Parliament as well as the national parliament. Hence their intense campaign in Serekunda in the times before the bi-elections and where they had miserably failed despite using all kinds of funny tactics to oust the man. Therefore if some embiciles choose to celebrate the fact that members of the same gang in the form of our good-for-nothing, incoherent, boot-lickig APRC parliamentarians had decided to snub a parliamentary proceeding because Mr Sallah was presenting the highly acclaimed report why waste your precious time on such deluded ignoramuses. Any sane Gambian would have been advocating a refund of atleast a month's salary plus expense including on food and drinks consumed in the above mentioned event. Why not leave Nyamato Daffeh and his like to continue to expose their folly in this forum while offering a "ndeysan" from a distance. Besides, wisdom is for the discerning while chattering fools are led to their ruin.

A prophet? 'asstakafurulia'. That is the worst of anything I would imagine even an Idol worshipper could say. May God rain mercy on all inept fanatics of Ayatollah Sallah. Ameen.

Halifa Sallah spoke and members decided to go and have coffee instead of listening to the Joint Report of the Pan-African Parliament how foolish. So what are they saying their prejudice against Sallah is more important than matters concerning the 52 others states which make up the AU. If NAMS want people to vote for them, then they should fix their attitude. GRT Television coverage of such debates would bring greater transparency to the chamber keeping members on their toes. This would be interesting for the Gambian Public to see why and who they should vote for next time around. These NAMS were voted into serve the people not stop and drink coffee. If they aren't doing their jobs then they are a waste of taxpayers money.

A friend of mine have just told me that a source close to westminster have told him that Martin McGuinnes MP and Gerry Adams MP too don't attend the Prime Ministers question time in the Commons, here in Her Majesty's realm. A waste of tax payers money too? I suppose the Big clutching fist' Chancellor should be summoned to appear before the public accounts committee then.

God save the Gambia.

Nyarikang, why do you act like a dummy suffering from a bipolar disease? How comes you have this weird moments when you cannot take things seriously - especially when the affairs of our nation is at stake?

How could any sound minded person hail the ridiculous things going on in our so called house of representatives? Are you aware that our so called house keep passing insulting legislation to you and I? Do you have anybody affected by the destructive regime in the Gambia? I wonder what are your political expectations from public officials? May be you are just content with just the fact that we have what we have today? Can you see anything positive in anybody? Are you infact a conspiracy agent in disguise?

I am begining to believe that there is only one thing that interest you, a certain group of people taking over power and ridiculing everyone else and treating them like beast...

Can you explain to the readers on this forum what you stand for? We need a closing chapter on your bizarre contributions so we can move to something worth spending our positive energy.
