No Sitting At The Assembly Due To. . .
There was no sitting at the National Assembly due to the fact that the Secretary of State for Finance and Economic Affairs was absent. The agenda for the day was the laying of the draft Annual Estimate of Revenue and Expenditure with Development Expenditure of the Government of the Republic of The Gambia for the Fiscal year 1st January to 31st December 2007.
This motion however, could not proceed due to the absence of SoS, Bala Musa Gaye. The majority leader, Honnourable Churchill Falai Baldeh proposed for the Assembly to be adjourned. Reacting to the absence of SoSs at sittings, Honourable Sidia Jatta, National Assembly member for Wuli West, asserted that the attitude of the National Assembly members of accepting to come to the National Assembly only to be told that the business of the National Assembly cannot proceed simply because of the absence of an SoS should change. "We need to be given notice. This is serious! We cannot come here only to be told that Secretaries of State are not here like we are school boys," Sidia said. The Assembly was adjourned to Tuesday 5th December.

Unbelievable!!!!!!!! Well I hope his constituents vote him out next time around. He doesn't comprehend the importance of attending a NA sitting to address such important matters. Perhaps Yaya's axe needs to fall one more time? |

Modou - Just to let you Know that the finance miniter is not voted in office. He is appointed by the president under powers confered to him by the constitution. It was during the PPP regime that ministers are Parliamentarians. It is sad though how one could be absent from such an important sitting. The secreterary of state for finance is a honourable person and I only hope his absence is genuine and the cause is in the iterest of the Gambia and not because he is trying to make some doubious changes in his speech to fool the National Assembly members and the Nation. |

Senno, thats correct. in the old constituion member of the cabinet were elected (Westminster model), in the new constitution they are appointed by the president (washington model).
the member of the national assembly are just running in circles but they know the constitution well they would have known that they also have rights to summon any SOS to answer question.
if they wanted him to attend he would have attend. |

Hi Seeno, it was Aku Piken who made the comment and not me. I know about the President's appointment of the Secretaries of state. |
