GPU PRESIDENT TO RECEIVE INTERNATION AWARD By Bubacarr K. Sowe
Madi Ceesay, the President of The Gambia Press Union (GPU) on Thursday left for the United State to receive the 2006 International Press Freedom Award.
Mr. Ceesay, is among four journalists to be honoured by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on its 25th anniversary, Tuesday, 21st of November.
In an exclusive interview with Foroyaa before his departure, Mr. Ceesay thanked his colleagues, noting that he could not have excelled without their support. He said that upon his return from New York, he would organise series of meetings and seminars with Gambian journalists in order to share his experience. “The young journalists will have a lot from my experience as a journalist for the past ten years,” he said. Ceesay, who is serving as the managing editor of the closed Independent newspaper has noted that his efforts to see the paper reopen are being frustrated. On the issue of Press Freedom, he said that for the past decade, the press has suffered severe attacks, harassments, arrest, intimidation and the unfortunate killing of Deyda Hydara.
