Empire day was a day when children from all schools and gambian world war two veterans used to gather at divisional headquarters for a march past in the morning and sports competitions in the afternoon. This was before 1965. The celebration is very similar to the independence celebrations on 18th February.
Can anyone tell me which date Empire day was?
In 1965 all students were given a badge and a cup on which were written "Gambia Independent 1965" for the celebrations.
Empire day was first celebrated in 1901 by Queen Victoria and she used her birth day of May 24 as Empire Day. It was changed to Commonwealth Day in 1958 a year after Ghana's Independence to include new independt nataions.
Please note that Commonwealth day was not celebrated on the same day through out the commonwealth until 1976 when at a meeting in Canberra, that the second monady of March was adopted.

Empire day was still celebrated as Empire day in Gambia until 1965. I remember attending Empire days and thats why I ask about the date
Yes. It was Empire day for us and Commonwealth day for others who were already independent like Ghana which gained independence in 1957, the first in West Africa. So depending on who you talk to, it was Empire Day and Commonwealth Day for others. Now its Commonwealth Day for everyone i hope.
