Fine, fine soldier, Fine fine soldier. Some are dere, some are dere: When he go to war, first class he go. Second-class he go;..... over.
I put the dotted lines there to take the place of two words which might give you the answer or a hint. Scratch your brains. This is history month on Bantaba

well some of us are too young, but we wait eagerly for the answers, and the story behind it. |

I will give answer tomorrow if no one answers it. This is the official song and sometimes you can hear the boys scouts sing it also like:
"fine fine soldier oh mamy fine fine soldier"(This is not the origianl but was adapted by the scouts)
It has nothing to do with the scouts anyway. |

This song was sung by the Royal West African Frontier Force which saw combat in Cameroon and East Africa against the Germans.
One of the head of the Gambia company of this force Brigadier General F. G. H. Cunliffe wrote about them as thus:
"They have been called upon to take part in a great struggle, the rights and wrongs of which they can scarcely be expected dimly to perceive. They have been brought through ...... extremely novel experience of facing an enemy armed with modern weapons and led by highly trained officers. Their rations have been scanty, their barefoot marches long and trying, and their fighting at times extremely ardous. Yet they have not been found wanting in discipline, devotion to their officers, or personal courage |

the story of African troops of former British and French forces is really a disgrace. some have died never even recieving a pension. in War memorials/anniversaries they are hardly invited or mentioned on TV. young people grow up today in Europe not even knowing the slightess composition of the forces that fought for their future.
Two weeks ago the French President annouced that France would finally pay the ex-soldiers a 'decent' comparable pension. it is going to cost the French Treasury Euro 500m annually.
after 60 years they realise this, and not to mention WWI. maybe they were waiting for the numbers to come down to an acceptable economy.
the german/japanese bullet didnt see skin colour. if Brigadier General F. G. H. Cunliffe was alive he would have been even more embarrassed, perhaps not.

Njuks you are right. They fought proudly and came home only to be ignored. Its a tragedy that they had to fight to liberate the peole of Europe when they themselves had no freedom but servants of the Crown. What an irony. It only showed that some people deserved freedom whilst those in bondage were less human.
They had no boots on and fought barefooted yet they never complained. |
