Interesting quote from the above thesis on why there are military coups,
"When a civilian govemrnment is unable to maintain order, it often results in the military being used as policemen for the specific purpose of restoring order. Such a course of action by the govemrnent triggers the military's decision to intervene, for it points to the extent of a govemment's vulnerability in terms of having to rely on the military for the purpose of maintaining order (Nordlinger, 1977: 86)."

Thanks Aku Pickin ; I fully agree with the substance of this thesis. One of the fundamental lessons to learn from this thesis is the underlying argument that it is politically unhealthy for a small group of people (one party centered around one individual) to monopolize power for too long (decades)amidst growing socio-economic discontent and a weak opposition . This could result in the creation of a nation of "lava" trapped under "layers" of oppression that could explode sooner or later as it did in 1994 in the Gambia.
