Are you meaning the 'simple' account which was set up by the UK post office, primarily to help people in receipt of Department of Work and Pension (DWP) State Benefits?
The UK Government has been phasing out giro (like a cheque/postal order) benefit payments - normally cashed at the post office - to claimants. The post office responded by introducing a simplified bank account which could be used to receive the new (and preferred) direct (paid directly into the claimants account) benefit payments from the DWP. The account can also be used as a 'normal' bank account, though it is not permissible to be overdrawn and some other features of regular bank accounts are not available.
Anyhow, the UK post office is now phasing out this account as it has not proved viable.

This is indeed a possetive move by the post office. It raelly seems we are moving forward with our previously stained post office in the past. Good news.I will ofcause think about opening one with them to give them a boast. Peace Janyanfara |

well i'm not aware whats going on in the UK now. but i was refering the original scheme in the UK which later became the GiroBank you're talking about.
''At the time, banks were mainly in the cities and largely catered to wealthy customers. Rural citizens and the poor had no choice but to keep their funds at home or on their persons.''
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_savings_system
but you're right the basic point is that people should have accounts and currently if you dont have a salary then you will need atleast a D1000 to open a bank account i think. maybe i'm wrong. D1000 seems very high just to open a 'simple' account.
perhaps some gambians who bury their money at home would start saving. i will not mention names.

Lemon, You are quite right. There use to be a post office savings book. I still have my old one from the early 70's. That post office book was very valiable because I know some Gambian seamen who were able to get jobs on boats and travel the world over with that post office savings book. I do not know if it exists still. |

Lemon, Such papper are good to keep for reference. I have to give information to my children about Gambia. They are not born there so they need all these things that shows that Gambia functioned without much problems as of today. I even posses my teachers Union and old voting card. |
