Love him or hate him Cornelius, the fact is he has passed tests of GAMBIAN DEMOCRACY AND IS THE DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE GAMBIA UNDER ALL ODD CONDITIONS!
One of the OPTIONS OPEN-ENDED for the way forward is RE-ORIENTATION AT ALL LEVELS (BOTH APRC AND OPPOSITION) and faced the new tasks and challenges on NATIONAL UNITY FOR DEVELOPMENT IN ALL SECTORS, POLICY ISSUES, GOOD GOVERNANCE, TRANSPARENCY AND DEMOCRACY inter alia!
The opposition should re-think on how to be more productive and effective FOR NEW ERA (i.e next five years. They should consider how to be supportive of Government and/or to integrate themselves rather than alienate themselves in NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
These proposals are forwarded because they are always idle and inactive after elections. They are bound to assume some responsibilities in NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS AND DESISTS FROM BEMOANING AND GRIEVIANCES ORIENTATED OPPOSITION PARTIES ALWAYS LED BY DISGRUNTLEMENT. I believe being disgruntled always is not helpful. It is important to re-think POSITIVE and not outcasted!

Relevant updates on "duty of care" as Magistrate Martin Takes Lawyers to Task - Calls for an End to ‘Unethical Conduct’ under http://www.thepoint.gm/headlines1294.htm
What this article depicts is the phenomena of corruption at all levels of society. Here its not specifically against the government but Lawyers are brought to tasks and many families suffer the hardships of affordability of legal fees to pursue justice through the courts.
However, the Justices system, Law & Order, rise in crimes and victims rests under the responsibility of government.
God bless the Gambia! |

Magistrate Martin's querry about the unethical conduct of lawyers in the Gambia is worrying. He has challenged lawyers for DELAYING TACTICS , INADEQUATE REPRESENTATION , and HIGH LEGAL FEES. Delaying tactics , one has to admit is a common practice of lawyers (just like defensive play by a winning football team), but magistrates and judges could set up a tight time frame for each of the trial and pre-trial ( deposition and interrogatories)stages at the "pre-trial conference" and strictly enforce it. Inadequate representation by a lawyer could be a cause for a mal-practice lawsuit by the client. Also the bar association could reprimand , suspend and finally revoke the licence of unethical lawyers. Perhaps Gambian citizens needs to be educated about their rights to sue their lawyers if they fail to represent them adequately. High legal fees ? Very common ! In the U.S. attorneys are paid by the hour , except in "contingency fees" ; and where several people in the office work on the case to do research , client interview , investigation , review documents and so on fees could often shoot through the roof instantly. However , many attorneys provide "probono" (legal- aid)work to assist indigent litigants. I don't know if probono work is available in the Gambia. |
