That is Youssou Ndour you quoted here when he said: DAW BE MUCHA, CHI NGORREH LA BOKA.[/b]
However, who should make it to the streets? Is that a wish or a practical proposition? The people who should take to the streets have spoken and voted Jammeh. So we have to accept the results and move on. It very well confirms what Somita posted about the parallels between Gambians at home and those in the Diaspora.
I have always believed that the contended person is someone who is least exposed to his environment. The more exposed one is, the more restless one becomes. One is then able to measure one’s conditions and that of others and begin to ask for more. Most people in the Diaspora would have been in APRC had they not traveled to experience freedom of speech, assembly and so on.
Most people who stayed overseas for years and then came home have had it difficult to fit in. Trying to live in both worlds is impossible. I don’t think its ok to take to the streets especially after a landslide election victory. Democracy is about the majority imposing their desire on the minority. The opposition is in the minority and they have to live with that until they are in the majority, unless if democracy is about minority rule. Although minority rights are sometimes "guaranteed" it could always be taken back if the majority decides to do so. After all even in the house they vote and the majority passes the law that the minority have to abide by.
If Gambians voted for them to be walked on, then they must have prepared their ribs strong enough and perhaps laid out soft mattresses to withstand the pressure. Until such time that the mattresses have worn out or have lost ribs, they seem to be happy for the “body massage” they are receiving.
I am confident that they will take to the streets if they “feel being harassed”. God never comes from the sky to liberate people. It happens through a leader. For now that leader seems to be treating them well enough to be entrusted with another five-year term. Unfortunately it seems like the opposition does not have a charismatic leader who can galvanize people to take to the streets. If any one tries to do so will fall in the same way as in April 10.
Quietly, Gambians will forsake you and your family to rot on wheel chairs. It has happened to others and will happen to any one. Politics is a dangerous business in Africa. Before you enter, make sure you have carefully carved out all your exit routes because the road leads to a cul de sac. That is why PDOIS is still hanging on to FOROYYA and that is why Darboe is keeping to his legal profession. Those who do not have skills that can allow them to be independent have become flip floppers or bent backwards to give in or as some members call them “political prosti…..”.
Economic independence is very necessary to enter into politics.

Agreable. Well reasoned. The two parallels are working. Thanks for the enlightenment. And Sadam was voted 99%. Even the less than 1% that voted for sadam were being sought for. |
