CIVIL SOCIETY COALITION ON ELECTIONS- THE GAMBIA
In recognition of the important role all citizens have to play in the electoral process and given the importance that elections are to be conducted in a free and fair manner, and a peaceful and stable environment in order to ensure that election results reflect the choice and will of the people, a cross-section of civil society organizations in The Gambia have come together to form a coalition to undertake election monitoring and observation under the name Civil Society Coalition On Elections- The Gambia.
The Civil Society Coalition, which is still open to all interested organizations that are non-governmental, non-partisan and neutral, comprises the following organizations: The Association of Non-Governmental Organization (TANGO) Social Forum The Gambia (SOF GAM) Gambia Workers' Confederation (GWC) The African Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) Amnesty International, The Gambia (AI) Action Aid International, The Gambia (AAITG) West Africa Network for Peace building The Gambia (WANEP) National Youth Council the Gambia (NYC) Worldview The Gambia (WTG) The Social Development Fund (SDF) Simma Vocational and Women Resource Center (SIMMA) The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) Women In Service Development, Organization and Management (WISDOM) Interfaith Religious Council (IRC) The Gambia Press Union (GPU) The Gambia Bar Association The Foundation for Legal Aid, Research & Empowerment, (FLARE) Future in Our Hands (FIOH) The Gambia Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) The Gambia Teachers' Union (GTU)
The aim of the Coalition is to serve as a platform for local CSOs to monitor and observe elections. The Coalition will as well conduct civic and voter education and peace building education in its bid to promote democracy, good governance, peace and stability in The Gambia. It will also seek to collaborate and participate in the monitoring and observation of elections internationally. The Coalition will work closely with the IEC and all other stakeholders to coordinate and facilitate civil society organisations' participation in election-related activities. The Coalition's secretariat, coordinated by WANEP-The Gambia, is housed at the TANGO offices in Fajara 'M' Section.
