AMIE SILLAH ARRESTED AND RELEASED
HALIFA REACTS

By Fabakary B. Ceesay

Barely a day after the nomination of the Presidential Candidates, one of the NADD executive members, Amie Sillah, was arrested at her residence by four (4) National Intelligence Agents at around 12:15 pm, on Tuesday, 29th August 2006.

Mrs. Amie Sillah, a rennin woman Politician, nurse, gender active, teacher and Journalist, was told by the NIA officers that she was under arrest. The officers who cannot produce any arrest warrant to justify their moves said they were acting on orders. Mrs. Sillah, before boarding a red frontera vehicle with registration number BJL 9068B, was in high spirits. She told the people present that they should not be worried about her arrest as this was part of the struggle to liberate the Gambian people, which have just begun. She called on the NADD Supporters to stay calm and focused. Just a fourth night ago, Mrs. Sillah addressed amass a NADD political rally in Serekunda.

The flagbearer of NADD, Halifa Sallah has written a letter to the IEC on the issue. Below is the text of the letter written by Sallah.

REPORT ON ARREST OF PARTY SUPPORTERS AND EXECUTIVE MEMBER
After careful observation of the political situation in the country I have come to the conclusion that the present regime intends to stay in power by any means. Historical circumstances however also dictates that those who want democratic mandate as we do are committed never to seek power by undemocratic means. How to restrain a regime which has no recourse to stay in power but by intimidation is the fundamental question of Gambian politics.
It is obvious that the best way is for the IEC is to ensure that it respects the Constitution and laws of the country.
Buba Sanyang, a supporter who completed 17 nomination forms has been in custody for more than 72 hours. Mrs. Amie Sillah, an Executive Member has been arrested by NIA officers for the past three hours without any explanation for her arrest.
We want immediate explanation from the IEC, failing which we have to communicate the matter to the moral guarantor of the Memorandum of Understanding, General Abdusalami Abubacar.
