A PLAY BY GAINAKO

Activist

I write to reveal the activities of some non Gambians both in the military, and those in the chiakas movement. My tears are we cannot afford to have our country in the hands of non citizens, especially if their activities are detrimental to our existence.

Monitor

This is equally worrying. It is time to reference our guiding spirit-the great Gambian Constitution, and see what is stated.

Constitution

I am the one that guides your citizenship. Monitor, I thank you for respecting my existence, but remember I am no more the good old friend I used to be. I am completely altered, and I wish to be amended back to where i will represent those under my protection. I agree a lot with Activist that there are many who I haven’t given citizenship yet, and some of the news reaching me is that theirs’ is only destruction.

Activist

I tell you of a reliable source that Sir Barama hailed from Cassamance. Sir Buji is also from Mali. Sir Ghagn was born in the Gambia, but his parents migrated from Dar-kawlack. These are the very boys working for President Dassawalleh day in and day out.

Monitor

These cases deserve to be investigated and brought before the courts for authentication. We will need witnesses to win the case, and of course convincing evidence. What do you stipulate Sir Constitution?

Constitution

I clearly stated the following, Chapter 3, Section 8:
Every person who immediately before the coming into force of this constitution is a citizen of the Gambia:
(i) Birth: “Every person born in the Gambia, after the coming into force of this constitution, shall be presumed to be a citizen of the Gambia by birth.”
(ii)Descent: “A person born outside the Gambia, after the coming into force of this constitution shall be presumed citizen by descent, if at the time of his/her birth, either of his/her parent is a citizen of the Gambia.”
(iii) Marriage: “Any person who is married to a citizen of the Gambia, and since the marriage has been ordinarily resident in the Gambia, for a period of not less than seven years, OR have been married another person who was, during the subsistence of the marriage, a citizen of the Gambia and, since the end of the marriage [whether by annulment, divorce or death], has been ordinarily resident in the Gambia for a period of not less than seven years, shall be entitled upon making application in such a manner as may be prescribed by or under an act of national assembly to be registered as a citizen of the Gambia.”
(iv) Naturalization: “Any person who has been ordinarily resident in the Gambia for a continuous period of not less than fifteen years, who certifies the conditions set out in subsection two [(A) Full age and capacity. (B) Good character. (C) Has clearly shown that, if naturalized, he/she intend to continue to permanently reside in the Gambia. (D) Capable of supporting him/herself and dependents.], may apply in such a manner as prescribed by or under act of national assembly, to be naturalized as citizen of the Gambia.”

Activist

I reveal to you further that Sir Dassawalleh himself hailed from Kamundai (Cassamance).

Monitor

Activist, are you ready to be a court box witness?

Activist

Sure, I will when there is a change of Government. You know I live in London, and I can only expose them. Under the current nightmare, the chiakas have me in their black diary.

Monitor

I am afraid that will be late, because we don’t know when a regime change will come. If all that exposure is true, then we should channel this through our politicians, and have the matter investigated, and justice will take its course.

Constitution

I am ready any time to be referenced. My own part is simple, and that is to say what is agreed on. I apologize for not being friendly nowadays, after I have been deprived of existence myself.

Activist

I tell you Sir Dada, Chief Editor of the Eyewitness Newspaper was killed on a broad day light. Sir Kaira, former Finance hero was burnt to ashes in the outskirts of Sareh-forest, just two miles away from Baajuloh International Airport. Furthermore, at least fourteen innocent students were killed with life ammunition on black April during a peaceful march.

Monitor

Oh Activist! Now I am in tears. We’ve all lived to witness such unspeakable nightmares. I wonder when God will help us from all these happenings.

Constitution

Like I said I am sorry. In that I also stipulated that any criminal must be tried for guilt or innocence. It is unfortunate, and a real tragedy that Sir Dasawalleh is the very one behind misusing me to suite his own life desires. By the way the Indemnity act after the black April was among the last strokes that broke the camel’s back.

Activist

I tell you further that the Earwitnes Newspaper was closed, and its editors still undergoing trial. The Free Newspaper was also hacked, and its readers arrested in numbers, and the latest reveal an absentia trial of two of its editors.

Monitor

I’ve been following developments. Sir Constitution, what are doing to my people, and you even have “absentia hearings” now?

Constitution

I tell you I am altered, especially that which deals with the media fraternity. I pray that a new Government in the pipeline will amend me to represent them too. This Government in the pipe land they called Commission Democracy.

Monitor

Umm. (Smile.) I will watch out for them.

Activist

My own path is unshakable. I will reveal all the atrocities they committed in the past, and currently.

Monitor

Good job! Your own path is admirable; just make sure revelations are accurate. History will crown you a Mandela or Malcolm.

Note: Gratitude to Lamin Sabally, formerly of IEC and Gambia Daily Newspaper.
