Infact on the gates of every government institutionn is written the words WALLAHU YAS MUKA MINA NASS. which translates as i seek refuge from the evils of men. I am not sure if it was ordered or some person took on it as hobby.

Was that tongue in cheek.. how long has that slogan been there? In Western world, that might be a called "branding" now...

Heres one even worse ... Over the gate at Aushwitz, there is a slogan, "Arbeit macht frei " which translates as "Work (shall) make (you) free" (or "work liberates")... another misnomer... some freedom, welcome to your maker.......

I have finally caught up on this thread on Brikama. Good stuff. Kons you should write books on history and politics if you aren't all ready and the story of the turban vendor was very amusing. This is the stuff of good conversation...

Brikama is also the home to religious fundamentalism. its a serious problem that they should control.

brikama is not important economically. it cannot march banjul, Serrekunda, Soma or Basse.

also many towns still keep those alkali/imam traditions you are talking about.

but you are right Brikama is important politically but i think this is due to the strong historical figures who had influence in politics when Chieftancy was important. i think they also used to have Mansa Bengo there. also it is the first major town from the provinces and the last if you're going out. after Brikama you are more or less in a rural environment.

i dont think it matters now. as a town Brikama will not determine the results.

i thought the Kaabunka themselves were refugees running for their life when the fulas almost finished them

No. We came to kombo before the war with Kaabu. We were kind of hired military in those years. never fearful of anything. Whewn we deakt with the fula empire, they were all scattered all over west africa today. madiba you came to gambia as a result of high handed ness on the fulani.

You rememeber the manding song which the fulani said: CHEDO KANA MARJO BANG. CHEDO JANG KEWLU KANNA MAJO BANG. It means warriors dont finish oru millet. Male Warriors of this place dont finish our millet. Actually the queen of kaabu wanted to cook lunch which had never happened because the household servants did that. She decided that to cook was history and therefore she was not going to cook with firewood. Instead she instructed household guards to use millet from the fields of the fulani.
