Source: translated directly from story narrations.
The two villages all next to each other, Sareh-enter and Sareh-yawn, are all victims of a terrible thirst that attacked these two villages, to the extend that it[thirst] creeped like underneath the village heads' beds. People were in a dying state. There is only one well [african source of water] in the area, while Sareh-enter has a rope, Sareh-yawn owns the bucket. It is certain that Sareh-enter's rope cannot fetch them water from the well, and the same applies to Sareh-yawn, the bucket cannot reach to the deep waters.
Now, the queation to all, what should these do villages do ?

This is tricky. If one has a bucket and the other has a rope but the bucket cannot reach the deep water whilst the rope also cannot fetch water. Then both the rope and bucket are of no use to them in so far as a rope will be the meanns of drwaing water. Some suggestions:
1. They either workd together and get a better rope so that they can draw water and reach the deep waters or 2. Someone gets down into the well as is sometimes done in the villages through holes created on the well walls 3. Move their village to a better location
However, the situation seems like the marriage between the oppositions in the gambia. They need each other to survive but each is incapable independently. United we stand Divided we fall. They know their problems but are incapable of solving it. Its more like the mandinka saying
SING BEH DUMA SAA BEH DUMA. FAARA NING JAMBA KATANG. SI NYO KUBUKA SI NYO KARA.

You already answered the question in the number one point. Before they move the whole village, almost everyone would have died of the thirst, and the well doesn't have climbing down/up notches. The best thing is for them to join the rope and the bucket, let the villagers drink water in the quickest time. Thanks for your wisdom. |

"In primary school arithmetic we were taught that when you add one and one together, the result is 2. Later on we learn that the result is two only if you are using the base of ten (decimals). In binary or base two, the answer is 11. Comparably, in biology class we learned of a special type of relationship between two organisms that is called synergism. Synergism happens when the total effect of two organisms acting together is greater than the total effect of the two organisms acting independently. Now, one plus one is greater than two."

When I was at primary school in Leicestershire in the 60s we were experimented on by Leicester uni maths professors. We were taught all about bases. Base 2 (binary) Base 10 ( decimal) etc.....it gave us a great understanding of numeracy at a very young age. We did alot of base work. This really helps improve your conceptual maths. |
