Also it seems that the opposition are still in talks to come together, with Darboe emerging has leader.....TBC

Reports emerging out of Banjul hinted President Yahya Jammeh's announced nationwide tour otherwise referred to as the "meet the people" tour has been canceled until further notice. According to official release from State House monitored on the Gambia Radio and Television Services, no reasons have been advanced for the latest postponement.

The State House announced earlier this week, of Jammeh's schedule to tour the country starting on Monday, August 7th ahead of intense campaigning for September presidential poll. It has been over 3 years since President Jammeh last undertook a nationwide tour, which is constitutionally mandated as part of the official duties of the Head of State. Year after year series of announcements have been made of the President's schedule tour of the country only to be followed with postponement after postponement.

However, some political observers who spoke to AllGambian.net cited security reasons and incumbent Dr. Jammeh's diminishing popularity with the impoverished Gambian farmers. The Gambian government has failed to fulfill promises made to farmers year after year that their groundnuts (country's main cash crop) would be purchased without credit.

"With all the talk of Jammeh's alleged popularity and his apparent display of strong-arm leadership, one wonders why Jammeh cannot undertake a tour of a tiny nation like ours for three consecutive years." said an observer. "Besides, sources hinted that Jammeh has been advised by Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy, who recently concluded a nationwide tour of the security forces, not to go ahead with the proposed tour, amidst growing discontentment of the regime in the provinces. It should also be noted that Jammeh is currently not in very good terms with his security apparatus, keeping in mind the latest alleged coup plot of March 21, and the apparent recent attempted arrest of his former close aide Captain Kalifa Bajinka, upon his return from military training in Nigeria."

I think Junkung is very safe in the Gambia. He is well entrenched in the system. I doubt if it has anything to do with security. Remember he was alleged to have walked the streets of Banjul asking people to remove him from power if they dare do it. This was after the recent alleged coup attempt in March.

No one came out. I think Jammeh can be president for life if he so wishes. He knows the Gambian psyche and plays it very well to his advantage. Perhaps it may have to with the peanut trade and farmers not being happy with him. As for security, i personally will not buy that. He is really in charge and very focused on the Presidency. The last thing Gambians should think of is a coup because history will not repeat itself as in 1994.

I don’t like a coup and I think the way forward is to go to the polls and cast our votes. We do not need a third republic nor can we afford one. The opposition should stop being power hungry and serve the interest of the people. There are more people in opposition than with his party but divided opposition only improves his chances because the constitution has been amended for a mere simple majority of one vote.

The clock is ticking for the opposition to unite. Unfortunately every one wants to be President in the Gambia. TOO MANY CAPTAINS AND VERY FEW SAILORS.
