IEC PRESS RELEASE
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2006


The Independent Electoral Commission, in exercise of its mandate under section 46(l) of the Constitution of The Gambia and Section 40 of the Elections Decree, wishes to inform the general public that election to the office of President of the republic of The Gambia will be conducted on Friday 22 September 2006.

The public is hereby informed that the IEC, acting under Section 47 of the Constitution and 42(1) of the Elections Decree will receive nomination of candidates for the said election of President of the republic of the Gambia on Monday, 28 August 2006 between the hours of 8 o’clock in the fore noon and 4 o’clock in the afternoon at the IEC Headquarters, Kairaba Avenue.

In exercise of its powers given in Section 85 of the Elections Decree, the IEC wishes to announce that the campaign period for the said election will be held from Thursday, 3 August 2006 to Wednesday, 20 September 2006.

The public is hereby also notified under Section 5(2) of the Elections Decree that the appointed Returning Officer for the election of the Office of the President of the Republic of the Gambia is Alhagie Mustapha Carayol, Chairman of the IEC.
Nomination papers could be collected from the IEC Headquarters from Monday 7th August 2006.

PUBLICATION OF PROVISIONAL LIST OF ELECTORS (VOTERS)

In accordance with Section 19(1) of the Elections Decree the Independent Electoral Commission, wishes to inform the general public that the Provisional List of Electors (Voters) from the just concluded Supplementary Registration of Electors (Voters) and the list of the Deletion will be published at the various Registration Centers from Tuesday 1st August  to Thursday 10 August 2006. The list for the Transfers and Replacement of Voting Cards will be published at the IEC Regional Offices across the country. The Provisional number of registered voters stands at 94,424 and that of the deletion 11,555.

The number of transfers is 1 ,06 1 and replacements of voting cards 2,799.
The public is hereby invited to check the exhibited provisional list of electors (voters) at various registration centers throughout the country.

In accordance with Sections 22(1) and 22 (2) appeals and objections will be received at the IEC Regional Offices across the country within 14 days after the publication of the provisional lists. A fee of D25.OO will be charged for any appeals or objection form.
Revising Courts will be set up in all Administrative Areas to look into the appeals and objections.
