Editorial UNILATERALISM OF THE IEC INSTEAD OF DIALOGUE WITH STAKEHOLDERS
The IEC should of cause be Independent. It should not be subjected to any control and direction by any other authority. The whole nation has been informed that the former Chairman has been removed. So far we have not received any public notice from the Office of the President to explain why he was removed. We have not received any indication that an official swearing in of a new Chairperson has taken place. In short, one anticipated that after the removal of Mr. Njie the IEC will be taking stock of its important mandate and will engage in consultation with all stakeholders.
However, just as the Chairman has been arbitrarily removed the stakeholders are also receiving public notices that confirms that the IEC is engaged in an ultimately policy of determining election time table without any regard to legal processes that set time limits for certain actions by stake holders. Hence ultimately all actions shall be bound by the dictates set by the date established by the commission rather than the dictates set by the law. The political parties which want a correct order should now get the message that when a system is flawed personalities do not matter. What is important is to combat the system while in court making preparation to rely on the people’s support to change it. The courts are created to provide redress.
Ultimately, it is the sovereign people who decide the fate of systems. Hence of one loses faith in a system one must have faith in the people and mobilize and organize them to change systems for the better. This is the task of the moment.
