My first step would be to get rid of religious schools on all sides. If ALL children had to go to the same comprehensive schools then they would learn about each other on a daily basis. Mutual understanding means barriers would break down and people would respect each other more.

| My first step would be to tear down all the ghettos and not force people to be stuck in those depressing concrete jungles, where most people have no other choise than to hang out with people from their own countries or continents. They donīt often even have to learn how to speak the language correct in the country they live in. Without proper skills in the countrys language, how can you be a part of society? We should all mix up more and live closer to eachother instead. |

Social behaviour, it does matter what school you go to if things are being taught at home or not being taught at home. Bad manners are bad manners regardless of education. Responsibility, being held accountability for what you say and what you do. sometimes the west is too lenient, i am not sure about corporal punishment but being made to own up and do something for the victims family. Where the parents are involved in a child persisent bad behaviour you see the change.

In the UK, I would like to see the British National Party banned. At present they are allowed to exist provided they do not break race hate laws but they constantly invent new ways to stir it and take up alot of public money whilst lawyers examine whether they have or haven't broken the race hate laws.
What this party wants is for the UK to be removed of anyone not of Anglo Saxon origin (yes, that includes we Celts, who were actually here centuries before them). They are white supremacists of the most disgusting kind and there is always a link between their campaigns and a rise in race hate crime.

Babylon, you are right - language is one of the keys. In Germany it took more than 40 years of migration and at least one lost generation to accept that language education is most important. But at the same time a change of view is necessary for the majority population, the awareness that a 'multicultural' society provides more chances and a broadened horizon for all.
I fear that for the European (German) officials 'integration' means that migrants should totally give up their culture and become like themselves. At the same time they are foiling their own integrational efforts, if they are making any, by denying equal chances to the migrants.
All this is nonsense leading to nothing. Acculturation always is a bilateral process, and though this is a cherished illusion of the European societies, it has never been a one-way street. A small example: Until migrants from mediterranean countries came to Germany, it was prohibited to sit on the lawn in a park. The migrants ignored this rule and had picnics there with the whole family. Not much later the Germans followed...
Europe ignored Rule No. 1: If you want to keep 'foreign' influences out of your society, stay at home, don't interact with others, and of course never, never have any colonies... |

the park thing is interesting Serenata. but i also think the idea of giving up your culture totally is emphasised more on the european mainland than say in the UK. for example i think in the UK communities are encouraged to keep their identities and celebrate them and not try to be english or Brit. infact this has been a success such that indian food is the most popular dish in the UK if i got it right (chicken ticka) . this would be resisted in France, definitely and might be seen as a threat than as an effort to integrate
maybe in the UK the political class has a longer experience with non-european immigrants , india, africa etc and they are more interconnected with the economies of these countries than in the mainland. |

By the way the English contribution to world cuisine is fish and chips. i miss the smell of the vinegar on my chips, fat soft and spongy wrapped in paper. The aroma so powerful i also miss the yorkshire pudding. Bradford here i come.
Chicken Tika reminds me of something funny. i cannot stop laughing |
