Women are pillars of society Says Hon. Sidia Jatta

“Allah does not place hardship on any human being. It is us who create difficulties for ourselves,” said Hon. Sidia Jatta at the three day sensitization forum organised by GAMCOTRAP on the theme “creating awareness and documenting issues on the life stories of women on Qiwamah and Wilayah in the Gambia”, held at its office’s conference hall in the Kanifing Institutional Layout. Addressing the gathering of women leaders, women of reproductive age, religious leaders and village heads, Hon. Jatta, the Chairman of GAMCOTRAP, said the world belongs to us as human beings, but we have to work hard and seek knowledge for us to be able to take ownership of it.

He said women are the architects of society and this means that they are part and parcel of the society and the world at large. He noted that there are many determined women who have been holding progressive positions in society; that some have even become pilots.

Hon. Jatta called on the women participants to stand firm and address the issues of inequalities, adding that women sometimes decline to take leadership positions by placing themselves very low and viewing themselves as just mere women who are powerless. He said women should migrate from such thinking and should believe in themselves as part of society, as mothers and wives.

He emphasised the role being played by women as being the drivers of their families and contributing immensely to the education of their children including the caring of the home. He said empowerment of women should be everyone’s responsibility. Hon. Jatta however reminded the gathering that the struggle for the empowerment of women cannot be won on a silver platter, adding that it was a big struggle for the women of Britain to get the right to vote.

Dr. Isatou Touray, the Executive Director of GAMCOTRAP, in her welcoming remarks said the meeting was in connection with the Qiwanah and Wilayah which refer to the issues women face in their matrimonial homes and whether they are in line with the principles of the Islamic religion.
She said GAMCOTRAP is engaged in development politics, but not partisan politics. She told the participants that women have the right to be protected and be empowered. She called on women to seek for knowledge for their empowerment and independence. In introducing Hon. Jatta, the GAMCOTRAP chairperson, she described him as a partner who has been working with them for more than 20 years now.

On the sensitization, Dr. Touray said it will also avail the participants the opportunity to hear the testimony of prominent women whose hard work and contribution to the empowerment of women lives have been documented. For her part, the focal point of the lady councillors in the Kanifing Municipality, Aja Ndey Jatta, thanked the organisers for the invitation. She paid tribute to Binta Jammeh Sidibeh for her contribution to women rights issues.

She said Gambia is also on the global map as women are doing everything. She said women should look after their interest and stop the rivalry.
