Am HIGHLY IMPRESSED with this GMC Press Release on ELECTIONS; timely for the Kiang West by-elections nominations on 1st November, 2013 but would have been better for A UNITED OPPOSITION FRONT (G6+NRP = G7) ELECTION STATEMENT
1. PUBLIC STATEMENT ON ELECTIONS ISSUED BY GMC LEADER, MAI AHMAD FATTY
PUBLIC STATEMENT ON ELECTIONS ISSUED BY GMC LEADER, MAI AHMAD FATTY
1. Consistent with the strong position of the Group of Six, GMC will not participate at the by-election to be conducted by the IEC with Mustapha Carayol as its Chairman, on Nov. 1st 2013. Even if Carayol departs, the circumstances of our inability to contest the last parliamentary elections in which the IEC forced us out, have not changed. Instead, we continue to experience more escalation in the constriction of the democratic space, and in particular access to the media and other information infrastaructure remain a formidable challenge. The electioneering and electoral processes remain hugely skewed in favour of the APRC, leaving little or no room for unfettered exercise of the plebescite. Our documented proposals for comprehensive reforms in the electoral process have all been denied by the IEC, and there are all indications that it has no intentions to change the electoral status quo. None of our conditions were remotely considered, while the position of the APRC continues to be tenable. Biased public comments by the IEC Chairman against opposition leaders disclosed the totality of his mind about how negatively he perceived the opposition. It is therefore impossible to conduct free and fair elections under his auspices...

1. APRC, NRP set to face-off in Kiang West by-election
The grounds have been officially prepared now for the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) and the National Reconciliation Party (NRP) – the only opposition party that has been contesting National Assembly and local government elections in recent times – to woo voters for the Kiang West parliamentary seat in the December 5th polls.
Madam Menata Njai and Pa Touray Bajinka of the APRC and NRP respectively, Thursday formally threw their big hats into the election boxing ring after the acceptance of their nomination by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) through its regional office in Mansa Konko, Lower River Region (LRR).
Flanked by their heavyweights and supporters, the two candidates walked into the nomination centre at different times for scrutiny of their eligibility and nomination requirements before acceptance was eventually endorsed.
Under a peaceful atmosphere characterised by great fanfare, the two candidates who spoke to the Daily Observer’s regional correspondent were both confident of winning the seat that was left vacant by the expulsion of APRC’s Hon. Yaya Dibba, who was shown the exit door after he was found to have broken the party’s rules....

2. APRC, NRP to vie for Kiang West National Assembly seat
Friday, November 22, 2013
The ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) and the opposition National Reconciliation Party (NRP) have nominated candidates for the vacant Kiang West parliamentary seat, the Independent Electoral Commission, IEC, announced Thursday.
The APRC nominated Menata Njai while the NRP nominated Pa Touray Bajinka for the bye-election set for Thursday 5th December 2013, the IEC said in a press release.
The Kiang West constituency National Assembly seat became vacant following the expulsion of Hon. Yahya Dibba by the APRC party after the party said that he was found to have conducted himself in a manner that runs contrary to the rules of the APRC, and the party cannot accept such behavior from its membership.
According to the party, Hon. Dibba was expelled in the interest of sanity within the ranks of the APRC party, as well as its support base.
