In solidarity with Fatou Camara

The Point Editorial: Published on Tuesday, October 01, 2013

We are dismayed at the continued detention of our colleague Fatou Camara, former director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the President in Banjul and host of the famous Fatou Show on GRTS television.
Fatou Camara was reportedly picked up from her house by two plain-clothes officers, and placed under custody at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency in Banjul since on Sunday 15th September without any official information as to the reason(s) for her detention.

If Ms Camara has done anything contrary to the laws and ethics of the profession or any offence whatsoever, we expect the authorities to resort to the courts of the land.

As Section 19 subsection (2) of the Constitution clearly states that: “Any person who is arrested or detained shall be informed as soon as reasonably practicable and in any case within three hours, in a language he or she understands, of the reasons for his or her arrest or detention and of his or her right to consult a legal practitioner”.

Interestingly, to our knowledge, as of now, no official charges have been announced against her and no official information was made available to this paper as to the reason(s) for her continuing detention by the NIA.

We have over the years emphasized the need for due process to be followed at all times, so that human rights are always seen to be respected in this country.

There is no doubt that Gambians will be happy to see that no one is detained for more than 72 hours without being brought before a court.

People may only be held for 72 hours before charges must be brought against them, the country’s constitution stipulates. After that, they should be brought before the law courts or released immediately.

Anything that goes against this is a total violation of the Constitution of this Republic, the supreme law of the land and will, therefore, be contrary to the rule of law.

A word for the wise is enough!

‘‘All we can do is to uphold the laws, all of us, without allowing the memory of justice to fade.’’

WHY IS FATOU CAMARA IN CUSTODY?
Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Tuesday, 01 October 2013

A JOURNALIST IS A JOURNALIST REGARDLESS OF WHETHER ONE WORKS FOR THE STATE OR NON STATE MEDIA

Foroyaa had raised the alarm that Fatou Camara’s detention without trial had clocked the 72 hours  deadline. Why then has she not been released or taken to court? Fatou is a seasoned journalist who has National and International standing. She has been the producer of what is considered to be a successful show on GRTS. She has been off and on the statehouse media staff. It is extremely strange that she is under detention without trial.

Foroyaa calls on the media community to meet to discuss on how to influence the elders in the Community in collaboration with the Gambia Press Union to visit her family to get whatever information may be at their disposal, contact the police to get more details and prevail on the authorities for her release.

People should not simply ignore her fate because she is engaged with the state media. Foroyaa will keep the public informed of all developments regarding her case.

FANS OF FATOU CAMARA REACT TO HER ARREST

Foroyaa Burning Issues News: Published on Tuesday, 01 October 2013 Written by: Mustapha Jallow

Fans and admirers of renowned TV Journalist and former Director of State House Press, Fatou Camara, have expressed their dismay and concern over her sudden arrest and detention.

Fatou Camara was arrested at her residence in Bijilo in the Kanifing Municipality for over 3 weeks now and her whereabouts is still unknown. She is renowned for her Weekly Television programme, ‘THE FATOU SHOW’ which is broadcast and aired on GRTS. It is a show that attracts many Gambians and non-Gambians alike. Sympathisers, enthusiasts or admirers of her show have been enquiring about her situation, indicating that they have missed her show for three weeks now. One of them mentioned that she was online on facebook for a brief period (maybe five to ten minutes) which was strange to him. With this development, this reporter yesterday 29 September 2013 ventured out in the streets to sound the views of people.

One Sainabou Njie, a resident of Tallinding in the KMC said, “I was dismayed and shocked with the News that Fatou is being arrested.” This great follower of the Fatou Show opined that Fatou has been very committed and hardworking in whatever she does, noting that the Fatou Show served as an opportunity to promote Gambian talents like Musical artists and cultural issues as well as interesting Educational Shows that inform, educate and entertain the entire Gambian Populace.
“I’m now scared to even work under the State because I’m discouraged with the frequent arrests and detentions of Government Officials, making me think that working with them could put one’s life at risk,” she lamented.

One Modou Lamin Darboe also describes Fatou as a decent young lady who loves whatever she is doing while contributing to Nation building. “We’ve missed the ‘Fatou Show’ on GRTS nearly 3 weeks now thus making us bored,” he added. This young man called on the State to promptly intervene since she has been held incommunicado without access to family and relatives.

Visiting Fatou’s residence in Bijilo to hear from the family and close relatives of the detained Ms Fatou Camara, the family member and neighbours insisted that they do not know much about her whereabouts and the possible reason for her arrest and detention."
