BANJULIANS TO BURY POLITICAL DIFFERENCES
"Development Oriented Citizens in Banjul (DOC) Banjul, is a proposed organization aiming to bring the people of Banjul together on a neutral and peaceful atmosphere, where Banjulians can discuss the city’s development without political interference. It is also aimed at working with anyone, be it government, NGOs or individuals in completing their efforts to develop Banjul.
With the motto “What Can I Do For Banjul”, the initiators of the idea called for an open meeting which took place on Sunday 12 May,2013 at Banjul city Council’s main office where they presented the idea to Banjulians. The idea, during the meeting, was massively welcomed by the gathering as they described it as “the only way forward for Banjul”.
Mr. Moses Nden, a veteran journalist who was serving as the Chairperson at the meeting, said the initiative is to reunite Banjulians and bring Banjul back to it’s best as the capital city of the Gambia. He described the gathering as historic as it brought together citizens of Banjul irrespective of their political differences and he was quick to add that the proposed organization is strictly non-political.
A founding member, Mr. Mbuguma Jeng of Lancaster Street, thanked the participants for coming to answer to the call of Banjul and also commended the Mayor for facilitating the venue of the meeting. He urged the gathering to perceive the idea as non-partisan.
Mr. Dawda Jangum, also part of the initiators, said it is their divine responsibility as Banjulians to come together for a positive change. He noted that they want to reunite the people and bring back the respect and dignity Banjulians had before. He urged all hands to be on deck for the development of Banjul as the central and local government cannot make it all alone.
Mamudou Touray of Lancaster Street expressed similar statements with the previous speakers. He said the need for the citizens of Banjul to come together cannot be overemphasized. Touray thanked the initiators for such a ‘call for’ idea and urged Banjulians to bury political differences as elections are over now.
The councillor of Banjul Half Die Ward, Mr. Momodou A.M Njie, said they are sent by the Mayor to come and observe as they took permission from him. He said the move would help them to develop Banjul rapidly. The move, he went on, is a clear manifestation that the people of Banjul are taking the ‘bull by the horn’. He said the organization should embark on a massive sensitization to inform the commoners of Banjul about the establishment of the body and seek for a collective participation for the development of Banjul.
Some councillors attended the meeting and they all assured the gathering of the council’s support whenever needed. A task force was selected to steer the affairs of the organization before the selection or election of the formal executive council."
