1. Where is Imam Baba Leigh?

SOURCE:THE POINT NEWS:
EDITORIAL PUBLISHED ON MONDAY 15 APRIL, 2013

"It is now more than four months since Imam Baba Leigh disappeared into thin air. Since then, several theories have been advanced for his disappearance.

Some say he was picked up by plainclothes officers in his compound on 3rd December 2012. Whatever the case may be, we believe that his continued disappearance is an infringement of his rights.

However, like the case of journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh, we want to be less pessimistic, and to be more optimistic.

We secretly hope that Imam Baba Leigh is somewhere taking in all that is happening, and that one day fate will surprise us by bringing him out onto the streets of Banjul again.

It is this hope that has led us to revisit the Imam Baba Leigh case.

He is not only a religious leader, but he is also a bona fide citizen of The Gambia.

It is, therefore, incumbent on the state to use all the resources at its disposal to find him, and put to rest all the speculation about his whereabouts.

We believe that all the calls for Imam Baba Leigh to be produced are in the national interest.

We believe that the legislative body being the National Assembly, which is composed of the representatives of the people, should be in the forefront of speaking out against acts such as disappearances of citizens of this country.

It is our view that the National Assembly owes it to the people of The Gambia to initiate a debate on the disappearance of Imam Baba Leigh.

That will be a way of taking the cases to the national level where they will get the sort of attention they deserve. When citizens disappear inexplicably, or get murdered in cold blood, then nobody is safe.

If it can happen to Imam Baba Leigh, Chief Manneh among others, then it can also happen to anyone of us.

Fighting for Imam Baba Leigh is no longer just a religious affair; it is a national matter because he is a citizen of this country who has disappeared in mysterious circumstances for more than four months now.

It is our belief that even if he had done anything wrong, his whereabouts should be made known, especially to his family members.

Kobo,

This is year's question that remains unanswered. About a month ago, I spoke with someone who told me he received a call from the Imam Baba Leigh, from the prison cell in Jeswang. From then on, I haven't heard anything ....others like Freedom suggested that he might have been killed. I have sources that I couldn't independently verify that suggest that the Imam is still alive.

My own take is that I have no clue, but something is suspicious. They arrested a man and they didn't disclose that they arrested him. He is not brought before the law and hasn't been charged with any crime. The regime's pattern shows that such people are never seen again. My conclusions are leaning more towardsthe fact that if they are not producing him, more than likely he is either hurt bad or they killed him. The man is about 60 yrs and might not be able stand certain other tortures.

Anyway, for the longest, I have said over and over, that if people cannot be honest with the little things, they will never be honest with the big things. Think about this Kobo.....think about it again.

Best,
Yero

DALTON 1. Jammeh is playing his dangerous "STATE TERROR AND FEAR FACTOR" political game, but Imam's persecution cannot go in vain! His campaign to arrest, detain, torture and/or exterminate outspoken Imam Baba Leigh (whom he perceived as enemy) is already one of greatest tragedy for Jammeh's arrogance. A clear sign of insanity and evil; towards his downfall and destruction

IMAM'S FAITH IS IN HANDS OF GOD!

MAY GOD PROTECT IMAM BABA LEIGH!

WE ARE PRAYING FOR HIM AND MAY ALL PRAYERS BE ANSWERED?

AMEEN!

1. HELLO GAMBIA NEWS;

2. THE DAILY NEWS;

3. TIME IS TICKING AWAY

SOURCE: FOROYAA NEWS:
EDITORIAL PUBLISHED ON MONDAY 15 APRIL, 2013

"WHERE IS IMAM BAB LEIGH, TERANGA FM, DAILY NEWS AND STANDARD?

When the President appointed a New Minister of Information from the Journalism sector it was conceived a signal that the Government was ready to allow professionalism to guide government policy in relation to the media. Many expected a speedy engagement that would result in the resumption of operation by the media houses that are forced to suspend operations. Since the appointment no change has occurred.

Foroyaa has also gathered that many people associated with Imam Baba Leigh are making frantic effort to secure his release. However no effort has borne fruit. Gambia is unique in the sense that religious leaders no longer have the clout to be mediators. After the Kenyan elections and the swearing in of Uhuru Kenyatta as President we have reliably learned that his meeting with Raila was mediated by Rev Jackson who like Jimmy Carter has become a peace maker.

In the Gambia no one seems to have influence on the ruling party. This is very dangerous for a country. Power is too mighty to be without a restraining force. Power that is not restrained could become destructive. It is important for the ruling party to retire from its holiday mood and engage in self reflection. What does its serve a government to close its eyes to the arrest and detention of an Imam for months without any official acknowledgement of his whereabouts?

People expect protection from a government not bans and threats. Time is running out. Those who are at the helm should know that they racing against time. It should not be business as usual. Certain things do not go away. The quicker they are addressed the better."

On the Imam Baba Leigh issue

SOURCE:
THE POINT NEWS: PUBLISHED ON THURSDAY 25 APRIL, 2013

"Like the rest of the country, I have watched as the cloud and mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Imam Baba Leigh continues to capture the public imagination. Imam Leigh is a bona-fide citizen of the Gambia and entitled to protection and promotion of his welfare by the State.

It is therefore vitally important that in a matter of such fundamental public concern, the State, as the custodian of the public interest, take overt, concrete and effective steps in addressing the whereabouts of Imam Leigh and ensuring his welfare.

In the absence of that, growing credence will be given to the perception that the State is not doing all it can on this matter.

Indeed Imam Leigh’s family have a legitimate expectation, in the circumstances, to know about his whereabouts or get an acceptable explanation from the State on why his whereabouts cannot be established.

It owes it to Imam Leigh, his Family and the Country at large.

1. FREEDOM NEWS;

2. Growing concern over welfare of Imam Baba Leigh

"Monday, May 06, 2013

The United States embassy in Banjul together with the British High Commission representing the European Union locally and the EU delegation in The Gambia, said Friday that it continues to be greatly concerned about the welfare and safety of Imam Baba Leigh, five months after he disappeared.

Imam of Kanifing Estate Mosque, Baba Leigh was reportedly picked up from his house on 3rd December 2012 by men in plainclothes and yet to be seen by family members.

In a statement issued Friday, the US Embassy ‘urge the Government of The Gambia to act in accordance with its laws as well as its international obligations.’

‘We call on all concerned to provide lawyers, family members, and international observers access to Imam Baba Leigh and to treat him fully in accordance with the laws of The Gambia and the accepted norms of international human rights,’ the statement said.

As a leading Islamic scholar, the statement added, Imam Baba Leigh is a frequent interlocutor of the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Department of State and is known as a trusted religious leader throughout The Gambia.

‘The Gambia’s National Intelligence Agency allegedly detained him on Monday, December 3 for reasons unknown. Imam Baba Leigh has not been seen or heard from in five months and the Government of The Gambia continues to deny providing information about his whereabouts,’ the US Embassy noted.

‘The British High Commission representing the EU locally and the EU Delegation in The Gambia associates itself with the above statement,’ the statement concluded." SOURCE THE POINT NEWS

[...During this exploration, knowledgeable people were contacted both at home and abroad, including neighbouring Senegal, to clearly come up with a definitive position as to whether or not the Imam was alive. The line of inquiry was directed to identify key people inside the Jammeh administration who possess the know-how of this mysterious, evil spin. Further, I endeavoured to speak with the stakeholders and key community elders located around the world about Imam Leigh’s disappearance. The end result of this complex, week-long query provided me with answers that established this sad news: that Imam Leigh is no longer with us. ...]

Folks,

If the information reported by Seedy is go by, the regime has done it again. From the onset, there was just something suspicious about the way that the man disappeared in thin air. I am not implying that the report is true. Like many of you, I am just getting increasingly worried about his whereabouts. The Gambia is very small. I am sure someone, somewhere knows where Imam Baba Leigh.

Can anyone with info please confirm?

Best,

Yero.

1. FREEDOM NEWS Breaking News: Imam Baba Leigh Freed At Last! We Won!

"Imam Baba Leigh has been released. We won! Our counter intelligence tactics works on Jammeh finally. Our goal was to get this fool release Baba Leigh by any means necessary. We told you Jammeh is afraid of pressure. Our work is paying off.

Pa Saikou Hydara, Baba Leigh’s in-law has just called to inform us that Baba Leigh has been released unconditionally. Mr. Hydara thanked the Freedom Newspaper for spearheading Baba's release. Good news.

The Freedom Newspaper reportage compelled Yahya Jammeh to release Baba Leigh. In a country where information is controlled, sometimes counter intelligence mechanism works if properly applied. Yahya Jammeh would not have released Baba Leigh if the Freedom Newspaper had not persistently pursued the story.

In Jammeh's mind, he has proven us wrong, but for us this is a victory. We have won with a landslide victory. We have at least save a life of an Imam. His arrest and detention was wrong in the first place. Baba Leigh has been imprisoned for five months without charges. Congrats to the Freedom Newspaper staffers and sources on the ground. Well done!

Welcome back home brother Imam Baba Leigh. We will talk to you later." - FREEDOM NEWS
