In response to a request from The Gambia for assistance following government's declaration of state of emergency as a result of flood in 2010 in which over 2,673 families consisting of about 35,000 people were affected, property damaged and some lives lost, the European Union alllocated to The Gambia 1.9Million Euros to build sanitation and drainage infrastructure in seven vulnerable urban areas with a view to mitigating the impact of future floods.
The project was signed on the 6th December 2012 at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, presided over by Mr. Momodou AK Secka, permanant Secretary at the Ministry, and Madame Agres Guilland, EU Charge De'Affair, and form part of the 10th EDF Country Strategy (2008-2013) for The Gambia.
Under the project, the local disaster agency, the National Disaster Agency (NDA) will also be provided with technical assistance through the World Food Programme (WFP) to improve the capacity of the agency in disaster risk reductions. This opportunity is now at risk of being squandered if the governemt choose to abandon the dialogue evisaged under Article 8 of the Cotonour Agreement.
The seven beneficiary settlements are; Banjul,Barra, Bundung, Soma, Basang, and Basse. This has been independently varified from the EU documents I consulted lately.
I wonder why Ebo Town which has a long history of floods is not given priority over some of these towns but anyway, these are the facts and the money involved is no chicken change.
Thanks
